SFC 2016: Finals Reserves Wrap v East Fremantle

Subiaco’s reserves lost in a nail-biting Elimination Final at Bendigo Stadium despite an inspired last quarter comeback.

The Lions trailed by 21 late in the last but put together a run to get within two. Subi had their chances to win the game late but ultimately fell short.

Subi’s team had a host of star performers and some returning faces. Defender Hayden Kennedy and forward Ben Sokol played their first games after being sidelined for an extended period and they both performed well.

Braden Fimmano led the disposal winners for Subi with 26 and kicked two big goals in the second quarter. Matt Bogensperger collected 25, Hayden Kennedy 23 and Justin Joyce 21.

It was a hard day for the forwards but Braden Fimmano and Ben Sokol both kicked two. Bill Fetherstonhaugh, Bradley Stevenson, Justin Joyce, James Garcia and Shaq Mckenzie all had singles.

East Fremantle had the early running with the first four scoring shots. Two behinds and goals to Green and Coulthard gave the Sharks an early lead. A Lewis Krakour goal put the Sharks ahead by 19 at the 16 minute mark. A fourth East Freo goal to Jacob Green put the Lions under the pump. Subiaco were held goal-less and trailed by 26 points at the first break.

Subi desperately needed the first goal but to their dismay, East Fremantle’s Jacob Green found some space to nail his second. The Lions got their first through midfielder Braden Fimmano and moments later Ben Sokol kicked truly to give Subi a boost. Justin Joyce got the Lions third consecutive goal at the 16 minute mark to reduce the margin to 16. Green kicked a third for the Sharks but a second for Braden Fimmano and a big goal from Bill Fetherstonhaugh reduced the lead to 16 points at half time.

East Fremantle got the first goal of the quarter again when Jordan Williamson converted. The game went goal-dry until Shaquille Mckenzie slotted a much needed goal for the Lions late in the third. Subi trailed by 19 points at the last break.

The Sharks peppered the goals but could only record points. Subiaco desperately needed a goal as the last quarter turned into a defensive struggle. The Lions got a huge goal through Ben Sokol to reduce the margin to 15 points. Big man Brad Stevenson had another quick goal and Subi began to close on East Fremantle. The comeback was well and truly on when James Garcia made it three straight for the Lions and a three point ball game. The Lions had their chances to win it late but fell agonisingly short to the Sharks by two points.
