As we draw closer to the 2019 Optus WAFL Grand Final, we take a closer look into Subiaco’s 2019 WAFL Premiership season.

Throughout the 2019 season, Subiaco had a total of 38 players play league football, with Kitchin, Delahunty, Clark, Sokol, Waters,and Horsley playing all home and away games during the year. South Fremantle for comparison had one less player, with 37 players playing league football during 2019.

It was quite the arm-wrestle if you take out a 12-minute burst in the third quarter, but that's all Subiaco needed to set up a match-winning advantage and ultimately beat South Fremantle in Sunday's second semi-final.

Delahunty claims 2019 WAFL Sandover Medal

Lachlan Delahunty from Subiaco Football Club was named 2019 Sandover Medallist at the vote count at Optus Stadium last night, Monday September 16, with a total of 28 votes.

Delahunty finished the count one vote ahead of Subiaco teammate Kyal Horsley on 27 votes, and previous Sandover Medal winners Kane Mitchell (24 votes) and Jye Bolton (22 votes), from Claremont.

VALE Kevin Cowl

Kevin COWL (photo below) became a trainer at Subiaco in 1956 and stepped up to the position of head trainer after the death of Tom Cross in 1968. He was elected a Life Member in 1974 and continued to serve as head trainer until 1978.  Kevin was awarded Diehard status in the first intake of 100 Subiaco Diehards in 2000.

Subiaco leaders share Dhara Kerr Award spoils

Subiaco captain Hayley Miller and vice-captain Danika Pisconeri shared the honours in the inaugural WAFL Women’s Dhara Kerr Fairest and Best Award on Monday, September 9 at Optus Stadium with 13 votes each.

Miller polled votes in seven of the nine games she played, including one 3-vote game and four 2-vote games. Pisconeri, who had a great season in the ruck for the Lions, polled votes on six occasions including three best-on-ground performances.

Miller, who is an AFLW midfielder for Fremantle, added to the Award she won outright in 2018 by continuing her strong form in the WAFLW State League competition in 2019.

2nd Semi-Final Match Recap

After a week off courtesy of securing the 2019 Optus WAFL Minor Premiership, Subiaco hosted South Fremantle in the second WAFL semi-final in perfect conditions at Leederville Oval, with the winner advancing to the 2019 WAFL Grand Final at Optus Stadium.

WAFLW Preliminary Final Recap

Subiaco had been the standout team for much of the first ever Optus WAFLW Premiership season and did finish as minor premiers, but lost the second semi-final to East Fremantle leaving them in a must-win situation on Saturday to keep their 2019 campaign alive.

The Lions had earned hosting rights for the preliminary final on Saturday afternoon as they took on Swans at Leederville Oval, but it was the black-and-whites who came into the game with the momentum on the back of a four-match winning streak.
