WAFL: Round 19 Match Preview vs South Fremantle

Friday, August 18, 2023 - 1:02 PM by Matt Paddick

Subiaco will aim to keep their spot in the top two, when they take on South Fremantle at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Saturday August 19.

With the Bulldogs being injury hit and out of finals contention, the side will be looking towards next year and how they can improve.

It means the Lions must be ready for anything, as they look to build on a three-game winning streak.

FORM

Subiaco have hit form at the right time of the year, as they look to secure a place in the top five.

After a string of close losses to Claremont, Peel Thunder, and Swan Districts, the side has bounced back with a trio of wins.

They defeated Perth, East Perth, and West Coast in the past three games.

A win will secure a finals appearance for the Lions, and keep them within touching distance with East Fremantle, who are a game clear on top heading into the round.

Meanwhile, South Fremantle continues to battle in season 2023.

After a two-match penalty prior to the start of the year, the Bulldogs have fought through multiple injuries to key players.

The side has had five wins for the year, and sits in eighth spot.

However, their younger brigade have shown sparks of their best, so the Lions will be challenged come Saturday.

LAST TIME THEY MET

Subiaco took the four points against South Fremantle at Leederville Oval back in round five.

In a low scoring affair, the Lions opening half saw them build a lead, which was enough to give them a 12-point win.

Ryan Borchet was influential with three goals, while Angus Dewar performed well down back with 17 touches.

ONE TO WATCH

Having a role change mid-season is never easy, but Jack Mayo’s move from tall forward to wing has been a fruitful one for the Lions.

Since his move up the ground, the 24-year-old has shown he’s able to find the footy, and use it well to set up scores down the ground.

His booming left foot is an asset, and his height in the middle of the ground makes him a strong marking option for the side as an outlet.
