It was heartbreak for the WAFLW side, who fell in a one-point thriller against Swan Districts at Leederville Oval on Saturday May 20. After a slow start, the Lions threatened to take control in the second half.

Outscoring the Swans three goals to one, the Lions evened the score on multiple occasions, including Hanna Dethlefsen who kicked truly for her third goal in the final term.

A behind half way through the fourth quarter for the Swans meant Subiaco needed to score to get back in. The Lions continued to surge, but Swan Districts’ backline was able to pick off the forward 50 entries.

Their defensive efforts were enough, with Subiaco losing 4.3 (27) to 4.2 (26).

Hanna Dethlefsen gave it her all to get her side ahead, kicking a game-high three goals. Meanwhile, Grace Hahnel continued her good form on the wing, with 16 disposals and seven marks. The Lions started off slowly, with Swan Districts kicking the first three goals of the match.

A leader needed to stand up, and Dethlefsen took it upon herself, finding space inside 50 and kicking truly for the Lions first. Behind by 13 points at half time, Subiaco came out an inspired side in the second half.

Repeat entries inside 50 allowed Kate Pocsidio to find Dethlefsen, who put through her second. Fina Dethlefsen executed a superb tackle in the backline, which resulted in the Lions going end to end for a goal through Olivia Wolmarans. With the scores level, the pressure was turned up with both sides fighting for ascendency.

However, a late goal in the third term allowed the Swans to get their noses in front at three-quarter time. With nothing to lose, the Lions gave it everything in the final quarter to get themselves ahead. While they outscored their opponents in the last term, a point halfway through the fourth term was enough to see the Swans get the win.

Meanwhile in the earlier game, the Rogers Cup squad was valiant, but ultimately took a 23-point loss to Swan Districts.

The WAFLW squad will look to get back to their winning form in the state’s north, when they take on Claremont in Broome on Saturday May 27.
