WAFLW: Round 17 Match Preview vs Peel Thunder

Friday, June 10, 2022 - 9:38 AM by Matt Paddick

Subiaco will go head-to-head with Peel Thunder on Saturday June 11 where the Lions will be playing for their season’s future at Leederville Oval.

After last week’s win combined with other results from the round, all the Lions need to do is win against the Thunder to keep their season going in 2022.

It’s set to be an exciting clash, as the WAFLW season nears its end.

FORM

Few teams in the competition have had a better month of football than the Lions.

Despite a loss in round 15 to East Fremantle, Subiaco have looked a different side to the one that featured in the first half of the year.

Their run so far has been highlighted by a strong 13-point win over second-placed Claremont over the weekend.

For all intents and purposes, this weekend looms as an elimination final for the Lions, where they must defeat Peel in order to sneak into the top four.

The Thunder have had an impressive month of football, with three wins from five games, so they will be a test for Subiaco.

LAST TIME THEY MET

It was a thrilling contest in round one of this year, when the Thunder took out a one-point win at Lane Group Stadium.

Subiaco’s accuracy in front of goal had them in front by 13 points at three quarter time.

However, Peel continued to fight, and were able to claw their way back before a late goal put them ahead in the 4.8 (32) to 5.1 (31) contest.

Captain Tarni Golisano was important with 19 disposals, while Amy Mulholland looked impressive with 19 touches and two goals.

ONE TO WATCH

Subiaco has thrived this season off the idea that when one player goes out, another comes in to take their place with minimal fuss.

Helen Taylor has come back into the side after a few weeks out, and looked at home as part of Subiaco’s defence.

While she’s played a role on a wing during the season, her ability to intercept and provide drive from the back half was key to the Lions’ win last week.

Taylor’s efforts were impressive enough for her to be recognised as part of the WAFLW’s Team of the Week, and she will be looking to back it up with another strong effort.
