Round review v West Perth

Monday, April 19, 2021 - 1:00 PM by Alice Miller

Certainly a weekend to remember, Subiaco went four from four through all their grades up against West Perth, especially Futures capping off their season remaining undefeated and the league boys reigning supreme with one of the games of the season so far.

LEAGUE

Saturday just gone saw Subiaco clash with West Perth to provide a footy spectacle of a game.  The Lions headed up to Provident Financial Oval in ideal conditions and left on a high taking a win of 3 points to store another four points in the bank.

The game didn’t start how it finished with West Perth looking to continue what they produced up last round against West Coast and went five goals to one in a dominating first quarter. Ball movement was slick and clean for the opponent and Subi’s turnovers made it harder for them to reciprocate what the Falcons were producing. The gap going into the first break was a 22-point void the Lions needed to fill.

Although West Perth continued with their clean ball movement early in the second, Subiaco responded in a big way winning the second quarter by a lead of 5 going into half time. The void was filled with three back to back goals driving the Lions past the Falcons to making it out to be a thrilling second half. Max Walters had a clinical second quarter to bring it back for the lions, clunking them all over the ground and making his presence felt after being absent from the League team last week.

With the same amount of scoring shots in the third term, it was the Lions who knuckled down to capitalise on the four scoring shots kicking 3.1 (19) to West Perth’s 1.3 (9). The majority of the term was an even end-to-end battle, up until Ben Sokol kicked two in the final few minutes to make the 25 minutes belong to the away team.

Saving best to last, the Lions looked solid and set for a big win as they entered the final term with a lead of 15 points. West Perth weren’t looking to give up in such a hard fought game and retaliated from a classic Subiaco storming fourth quarter with goals from their players, Riddoch and Knott when it mattered most. The Falcons stole the lead and as the final siren looked to be sounded within a few moments, the four points had the home team’s name written all over it in what would’ve been a revival victory to the Falcons. Ryan Borchet brought the game closer to favour the Lions again with an urgent goal. Down by 3 and limited seconds to go, Greg Clark bursted out of the stoppage 20 metres from goal and kicked the sealer and ultimate match-winner for a triumphant and worthy win by the Lions.

The game overall was a proven tight contest in all facets of the game, with inside-50s identical, scoring shots and disposals only three stats the differences in favour of the Lions and Hitouts won by Subi also 39 - 33.

Greg Clark was the undoubtedly the star of the game, not just with his match winning strike, but his 37 touches, 5 inside-50s, pressure acts (8 tackles) and clunking the ball 8 times, did he provide a clinical performance in a win to remember. Harry Marsh continues to impress and went at it with 27 disposals, 7 inside-50s and capped it off with two majors to show his class. Kitchin did what Kitchin does and got his hands on the ball 32 times and brought the intensity with six pressure acts. Kennedy and Braut held up out back with 21 and 19 touches respectively and was crucial to stop a fast tracked West Perth ball movement at times.

Each of Subiaco’s goal kickers were most vital in a game with a final margin less than goal. Key forwards Ben Sokol and Jordan Faraone were formidable in front of goal with four majors each. Marsh and Borchet kicking two apiece in their own exceptional showings. Litherland putting in his part on the scoreboard with a goal and Greg Clark certainly kicking the sole most crucial goal of the game.

The nail-bitting clash was a neutral footy-fan’s ideal showing and despite West Perth going down in the end, presented to the rest of the competition just what each team is made of. Subiaco ultimately displayed real determination and desire in the end, leaving it down to the wire, but coming up big to continue to show why they are top of the table this season.

The next test will be against the West Coast Eagles who would certainly not stand by their current form and look to find their first win of the season for the ANZAC clash this Saturday. Bouncedown will be at 3:10pm and will be a home game for the Lions at Leederville Oval.

West Perth looked to respond evidently in the third 3.3 but managed to fall short again to the Lions additional 4.2, leaving it to the final term to be the home team’s chance to grab the game to turn in their favour. Subiaco didn’t ever look like stopping with five goals to two in the fourth quarter and brought about their second win of the season by 34 points.

Like the League boys, Reserves sits with four other teams on two wins of the season now after that victory and with percentage in their favour puts them top of the table.
