WAFLW Round 1 v South Fremantle Match Preview

Tuesday, February 16, 2021 - 8:48 AM

This Sunday, Subiaco will look to kick off their 2021 campaign in style as they come up against South Fremantle. Their Round one clash will be at Fremantle Community Bank Oval, with bouncedown at 1:00 pm on Sunday afternoon, February 21.

FORM

Subiaco were a dominant force in 2020, securing the minor premiership and coming into the 2020 WAFLW Grand Final as favourites, however coming up short against a tough opponent in Peel Thunder.

Under new coach Michael Farmer, the Lions will look to execute their new game plan and blood younger players, with a handful of players not available for this weekend who competed at last year’s Grand Final.

Subiaco did not play any practise matches against other WAFLW teams prior to the WAFLW Premiership Season, so this weekend will be the clubs first competitive hit out of 2021.

OPPONENTS FORM

South Fremantle finished 2020 on the bottom of the table in their first year in the WAFLW, however they have had a solid pre-season and will look to shoot their way up the ladder with an improved team in 2021.

South and East Freo had a hit out last weekend, with the Bulldogs coming up short by 22 points. The final result saw East Fremantle 5.8 (38) def. South Fremantle 2.4 (16).

LAST TIME THEY MET

The last time these two teams met were in round seven of the 2020 WAFLW Premiership Season. The Lions finished the game 14 point winners, Subiaco 6.11 (47) def. South Fremantle 5.3 (33). After a scoreless first quarter by the Bulldogs, it saw the Lions pull ahead by 29 points at the first break and it looked like the Lions would cruise to victory. Amazingly, the Lions only scored two more goals for the match, as inaccuracy in front of goal always left South Fremantle with a chance in the contest. The Lions dominated the contest but could not impact the score board in a way they would have liked as they only scored six goals from a mammoth 17 shots on goal.

GOAL KICKERS

Amy Lavell was the star of the show as the ex-Fremantle Docker turned player/coach booted three majors, stamping her authority on the contest in the process. Aimee Schmidt was dominant up forward also but failed to convert her chances; finishing with 1.4 for the afternoon. Tiah Haynes and Maggie Maclachlan provided ample support also, as they both kicked a goal each.

IN ONE SENTENCE

The Lions were a dominant force in Season 2020, with this weekend looming as the perfect opportunity to show the rest of the competition that they ready to achieve the ultimate success and claim the clubs maiden WAFLW Premiership in 2021.
