Former Subiaco and AFL Premiership Player, Des Headland was at Colts training last night ahead of the WAFL NAIDOC Round this upcoming weekend.

Headland played junior football for Karrinyup Junior Football Club before debuting for Subiaco in 1998, playing 17 games in his first season with the League squad. In the 1998 draft, Headland was drafted to Brisbane Lions with pick number 1 and was part of one of the best teams in the AFL lining up with Voss, Black, Akermanis, to just name a few. Whilst at Freo, Headland made eight appearances for Subiaco, before retiring from the AFL to return to Subiaco and play 17 games in 2011-2012, including the 2011 Grand Final loss against Claremont.

Ahead of this weekend’s clash against Perth in the WAFL’s NAIDOC Round, Headland talked to the Colts players about his personal footballing journey; but most importantly he talked to the players about his indigenous heritage and what it means to be an Indigenous Australian and the daily challenges that indigenous people still face in modern society.

The Colts team currently have four indigenous players playing for Subiaco, Tyler Brockman, Ezekiel Bolton, Malcolm Garlett and Richard Farmer (absent) all who talked to the rest of the playing group about their indigenous heritage and what it means to them.

This week Tyler and Ezekiel will toss the coin in the colts match vs Perth to acknowledge the indigenous community and the significant contribution that indigenous players have made to the Subiaco football club and football across the country.
