Round 6 Recap v East Perth

Monday, August 24, 2020 - 11:37 AM by Creed Griffiths

LEAGUE
After a dominant display against Peel Thunder, the Lions were confident heading into the clash with East Perth, hoping their new-found momentum would continue to carry them forward into the second half of the season.

In mild and favourable conditions at Leederville Oval, Subiaco were aiming to register their first home win for the 2020 season, but East Perth had other plans.

In a relatively tight tussle, marred by poor disposal efficiency and wasteful attempts in front of goal, Subiaco were defeated 7.12.54 to East Perth 9.9.63, with an after-the-siren goal by forward Ben Sokol bringing the margin of defeat down to single digits. The loss now sees Subiaco in fifth position, falling two wins behind fourth-place Perth.

The scores were all tied up after the first break, with only a single goal coming for the Lions in the second quarter seeing them fall 15 points behind at the main break and lucky to still be in the contest. Subiaco’s woes by foot continued in the second half, as they registered seven more behinds to go with a disappointing disposal efficiency of 54%, valiantly remaining within touching distance of the Royals all afternoon.

Ben Sokol marked his return to form with a strong performance, doing what he does best; kicking three straight majors on his way to reigning in seven marks. Sokol was ably supported by Edwards-Baldwin and Martin up forward, who each scored two goals; but it was not enough to ensure a Lions victory. Jack Beverley was terrific around the contest, amassing 12 tackles to go with 10 disposals, while Leigh Kitchin (25 disposals, 3 marks, 5 tackles) and Gregory Clark (22 disposals, 8 marks, 5 tackles) continued their strong seasons, finding plenty of ball once again, while having a strong impact around the ground.

RESERVES
Following last weekend’s bye, a well-rested Subiaco took on an unbeaten East Perth outfit at Leederville Oval. With both teams coming off nail-biting wins in their last starts, a mouth-watering contest loomed for two of 2020’s Finals contenders.

The Royals got off to a fast start, kicking two unanswered goals in a first quarter, they could’ve opened up an even bigger lead had they been more accurate in front of goal. By the major break though, the two sides couldn’t be split at 24 points apiece, with no margin to speak of at the final break as well.

East Perth kicked away in the last, proving too efficient by foot; booting five last quarter goals to two and running out eventual 8.9.57 to 5.9.39 winners.

Mitchell Hughes and Brandan Young shouldered the load in front of the goals, booting two majors each, with Nathan French providing support with one of his own.

COLTS
Round 6 of the Simply Energy Colts’ competition saw Subiaco take on co-tenants of Leederville Oval: East Perth. In a tight contest early, Subiaco ground its way to a 14.8.92 10.7.67 victory, running out 25-point victors over an improved East Perth outfit.

At the conclusion of the first quarter, only two points separated the two sides, with both sides moving the ball freely between the arcs. Subiaco once again got their game up and running after the first break, putting on a dominant display that saw them boot 11 majors to East Perth’s seven.

Subiaco was excellent with ball in hand, recording less disposals than the Royals but winning the inside 50’s count 41-31, using the ball very well across the ground. Lachlan Vanirsen continued on with his great run of form amassing 26 disposals to go with four inside 50’s, with Lachlan McKay recording seven of his own, to go with 17 disposals for the day. The forward group continued their rich vein of form; with Sandon Page, Jaxon Bilchuris and Sam Broughton, who was on debut, all kicking 3 goals apiece.

Along with Broughton, the other debutant in Jack Quartermane, performed strongly in his first showing for the club, with the young Lion plying his trade forward of centre on his way to recording 13 disposals for the morning,

WAFLW
In the penultimate round of the WAFLW home and away season, the top placed Lions looked to continue their unbeaten run as they travelled away to New Choice Homes Park in a home game to take on East Fremantle.

The Lions were always in the contest, but simply could not apply any scoreboard pressure in the first half, going goalless on their way to registering a measly three behinds. Inaccuracy in front of goals from the two teams led to a tight affair, with both sides behind tallies more than doubling their amount of goals.

Both sides registered 2.3 in the second half, but the Sharks led from the first siren and retained their lead throughout the afternoon. Their wastefulness in front of goals always kept Subiaco in with a chance, but the Lions were left to rue their poor first half which ultimately cost them the four points come the final siren.

Jacqueline Toth and Danika Pisconeri were the lone goal kickers for the Lions, who will be keen to make amends in front of goals as they head into this season’s finals campaign.
