Subiaco’s Development side fell 19 points short in their Qualifying final match against West Perth at Arena Joondalup on Sunday. In horrible conditions, which included a torrential downpour in the 2ndquarter, the Lion’s weren’t able to control the wet and slippery ball as West Perth made the most of their inside 50 and scoring chances.

The Lion’s made the most of the dry conditions at the start of the game and despite West Perth kicking the first goal of the game, they were in control of the game leading the inside 50 count 13-7 in the 1stquarter. Clancy Wheeler opened up Subiaco’s account but inaccuracy cost the Lion’s kicking 1.4 for the quarter to West Perth 2.0.

The rain tumbled during the second quarter and West Perth were cleaner by foot and dominated the quarter kicking 4 goals to 0 taking a match winning lead of 27 points into the main change. Wheeler presented well down forward and through the ruck with 10 disposals before a facial injury cut short his day.Rowan Powell, returning from injury, ran his wing well with 13 disposals while Hickmott toiled hard with 11 first half possessions.

The Lion’s, motivated by a spirited half time talk from coach Matt Cavedon, responded with a goal in the opening minute thanks to a converted kick by Jordan Faraone from a high tackle. A consecutive goal from Tristan Hobley got them back to within 15 points and showing signs of a fightback. This was snuffed out by West Perth who kicked a late goal before the final change. The two teams would trade goals in the last quarter before the match finished with West Perth 19 points ahead.

The loss will see Subiaco play East Fremantle at Leederville Oval in the Semi Final as both teams play off for a preliminary final. Daniel Leach fought hard all game with a team high 20 disposals while Hobley, Will Hickmott (18 disposals) provided run throughout the game.
