Subiaco Connection Still Strong for Former Lions

Wednesday, January 30, 2019 - 10:04 AM

The Subiaco Football Club has a proud history of comradery within its playing group and premiership sides, and over the summer festive period two groups from different parts of Australia showed how strong the bond of Subiaco is.

In Melbourne a group of 10 former Subiaco players and coaches were together for dinner, while in the South West of WA, 13 former Subiaco players got together for what has become a regular catch up over lunch.

Premiership players Ross Smith, Mike Fitzpatrick, Dick Manning, Mark Zanotti, Shane Cocker, Gary Crouch, Neil Randall, Laurie Kenne, Ian Dargie, Andrew MacNish, Austin Robertson, Greg Wilkinson and Bret Hutchinson were all at one of these two functions, with other key footballing figures with Subiaco ties in Kevin Merifield, Trevor Nisbett and David Parkin among the groups.

The South West Lions, have been meeting regularly in recent years, catching up a few times a year for lunch and trying to get to a Subiaco match day each year.

With a host of former Subiaco players having ties to the region, the comradery and mateship has continued to grow within this loyal Lions group.

This year’s lunch had a trio of special guests, with the 2018 premiership cups of Subiaco’s league, reserves and colts premiership making the journey to be on hand for the lunch.

On the east coast, it is a similar theme, with a number of former Subiaco players and coaches ensuring that they catch up to reminisce on former playing days regularly each year.

Subiaco continues to be a club proud of its on-field successes and proud of the mateship that the football club has brought to hundreds of young men.
