Subiaco Claim Another Round 21 Clean Sweep

Monday, August 27, 2018 - 5:57 PM

Subiaco has claimed minor premierships in all three grades in the same season for the first time as the Subiaco Reserves defeated Perth, wrapping up their own minor premiership, to sit alongside the league and colts team at top of their ladder.

The colts also had a tune up for finals, with a comfortable win to round at their home and away season.

Both the Subiaco Colts and Reserves will now have a weekend off, able to sit back and watch the Qualifying Finals next week before getting a chance to book their place in a 2018 Grand Final.

RESERVES RECAP

Subiaco’s Reserves got an all mighty last quarter fright, holding on to beat a plucky Perth by seven points, wrapping up the 2018 WAFL Reserves Minor Premiership.

After seeming on track for a comfortable win when they built a 24 point half time lead, Subiaco were forced to sweat out a nervous final ten minutes as Perth rallied.

It was indeed a stellar defensive performance by the Subiaco back six that was most crucial in the win, with the Lions defence not breaking in the last five minutes as Perth constantly pressed.

Able to get a counter attack going, it was Ryan Wade who found himself open inside 50 and able to kick an ice cool sealer to confirm the Subiaco win with just two minutes remaining.

Subiaco’s efforts were led by Daniel Leach and Travis Cleggett in the midfield with Leach collecting a game high 27 possessions and Cleggett having 24 possessions.

Down back Jakob Atkinson and Ben Reid had enormous contributions, particularly late as Perth threatened to steal the lead.

Up forward Ray Daniels kicked four goals, while Ryan Borchet added two, to be the most threatening Lions forwards on the day.

Subiaco’s second semi final opponent will be decided when East Perth and Claremont battle in the Reserves Qualifying Final next week.

GAME CHANGERS

GUTSY FINISH

Subiaco’s gutsy final quarter salvage of the win was made even more momentous given they were down a rotation for most of the game, after Aaron Breman suffered an early hamstring injury. It has been a tough run for the popular Breman who has battled injury issues over the past two years.

WINNING THE TACKLE COUNT

Subiaco’s Reserves thirst for the contest has been seen all season with winning tackle counts over their opponents. That was again the case in Saturday’s game as they outtackled Perth 79 to 68. Big man Sean Bradley led the way with seven tackles with McKenzie Lawrence, also having seven and Ryan Wade, Jack Beverley, Daniel Leach, Travis Cleggett and Liam Connoly all recording six tackles.

SECOND QUARTER DIFFERENCE MAKER

The second quarter for the second week in a row was the big one for the Reserves. After breaking the game against East Fremantle open with six goals to nil last week, Subiaco had six goals to three in the second on Saturday, kicking over half their goals in the 25 minutes of the second quarter.

HOT FORM INTO FINALS

Subiaco heads into finals having won their past four games. Their best winning run of the year is five games recorded between Rounds Seven and 12. Against their potential Qualifying Final Opponents Subiaco has a 3-1 record.

COLTS RECAP

Subiaco’s Colts head to the 2018 WAFL Finals riding an 11 game winning streak, after finishing their home and away season with a comprehensive 89 point win over Perth.

It was a significant victory for the Subiaco Colts, given that the match was played on Subiaco’s spiritual home at Subiaco Oval, in many cases the first opportunity for the young Lions to play on the ground in the maroon and gold.

The win was set up with a blistering nine goal to one first half, as the Lions built up a 55 point half time lead, continuing on from there, with a comprehensive four quarter win.

In another even all round team display, Tristan Hobley led the Lions with 32 possessions as six teammates also collected at least 20 possessions.

The goals were evenly spread, with Jordan Faraone leading the way with three goals, and four teammates getting two.

Subiaco will now rest up this week before taking on the winner of next Sunday’s Colts Qualifying Final where Peel will battle Swan Districts.

GAME CHANGERS

WINNING FORM IS GOOD FORM

While Subiaco’s league team has won much praise for their unbeaten 2018 campaign, the Subiaco Colts season has been equally impressive. The Lions lost three straight games in May before rattling off a current 11 game winning run. Two of Subiaco’s losses came by a kick, meaning they were within a couple of goals of achieving a 17-1 season.

THRIVING ON SUBIACO

Their famous fathers have produced on the Subiaco Oval stage, and Taj Schofield, Liam Hickmott and Wil Hickmott followed in those footsteps with outstanding games on Sunday evening. Schofield was a presence going forward having eight inside 50s with his 23 possessions while Liam had eight tackles to go with 20 possessions. Wil not to be outdone had 21 possessions and eight marks.

TACKLING MCKINNON

Jake McKinnon has continued to show a thirst for the contest, on Sunday he had 11 tackles, almost beating his disposal count of 12. McKinnon has three games this year of over 10 tackles and is one of the key reasons that Subiaco has constantly beaten their opponents in the tackle count.

BIGGEST WIN

The 89 point win on Sunday was Subiaco Colts biggest of the season. Interestingly Subiaco’s biggest two wins by point margin were the bookends, Round One against East Perth and Round 21 against Perth.

FINAL

SUBIACO         4.5       9.9       14.9     17.15.117

PERTH             1.1       1.2       3.3       4.4.28

BEST: Schofield, McKinnon, L. Hickmott, Faraone, Mayo.

GOALS: Faraone 3; French, Kennedy, Mayo, Peletier 2; Clinch, Golding, Hobley, Martin, Shellabear-Healey, West 1.
