Leederville to Host Country Week on Friday with Goldfields Ready to Contend

Tuesday, July 3, 2018 - 2:58 PM

Leederville Oval will this Friday be the centre of WA football with an afternoon of Landmark Country Championship football to be followed by the opening game of NAIDOC Round, when Subiaco take on Peel in Friday night football.

The Subiaco Football Club is excited to host Division Two of the Landmark Country Championships with five of West Australia’s proudest country competitions set to contest for 2018 Country Week glory.

Leederville Oval will see Central Midlands Central Football League, Goldfields Football League, Lower South West Football League, Mortlock Football League and Ongerup Football Association compete in five round robin games across Friday afternoon, with all teams to play two hour long games across the day.

Subiaco is particularly excited to host one of its two association sides with Goldfields Football League having a proud history and association with the club.

After finishing as runners up last year the Goldfields will be looking to take a step further in 2018, with these first matches at Leederville crucial in starting strongly ahead of a finals appearance on the Sunday at Claremont Oval.

The Goldfields have a strong selected squad with a distinct Subiaco flavour.

Among some of the players selected are Greg Broughton, a league premiership player and Dylan Clarke a Reserves Premiership Player with the Lions.

The squad also includes a host of names with both AFL and WAFL experience including Dion Fleay, Kyle Hams and Nathan Krakouer.

The side also includes some young guns of the Goldfields League with Fraser Softley, Jackson Perry and Michael Stevens a trio of 18 year olds who have made the squad.

The Goldfields side will be coached by Kody Kelman who is an experienced and well respected coach within the Goldfields region, having led the representative sides for the past three years.

Post-match, Subiaco will be hosting the Goldfields team for a team dinner during the first half of the Subiaco and Peel match.

With Country Week again falling on school holidays, the Subiaco Talent program have also taken the opportunity to invite a host of the brightest young players from Subiaco’s country region to participate in a Friday event and Saturday morning match.

The youngsters will have their own function on Friday night with a Regional Talent match to be held from 9am on Saturday morning.

The Leederville Sports Bar & Functions Centre will be open from 1pm, so you can watch all the action on field while enjoying it from the warm and friendly environment that the Subiaco Football Club provides.
