Reserves Record Win while Colts Lose Close One in Mandurah

Monday, May 21, 2018 - 11:44 AM

Subiaco’s Reserves side moved into the top five after accounting for Peel in their clash on Saturday, while the Subiaco Colts dropped a nailbiter in the early fixture to commence Round 7 of the 2018 WAFL season.

For the Reserves it was an important bounceback to form after a disappointing loss to West Perth in their last outing, holding a second half lead throughout on route to a 25 point win.

Subiaco opened the game up with a seven goal second quarter to build a 34 point half time lead, and while Peel threatened at times in the second half, the Reserves defence held form, and the forwards kicked enough goals to maintain the lead.

Michael Braut led the side with 25 possessions, six marks and five tackles producing another strong display at Reserves level.

Meanwhile Daniel Leach had another good game with 23 possessions and Tom Edwards-Baldwin and Ben Reid each had 17 possessions for the game.

Up forward talls Andy Doyle, Sean Bradley and David Ehlers each kicked three goals to be the leading forwards on the ground.

Subiaco face another tough Reserves challenge next week, when they take on fourth placed Perth at Lathlain Park next Saturday.

GAME CHANGERS

OMITTED PERFORM STRONGLY

Michael Braut and Daniel Perkins were the two players to be squeezed out from Subiaco’s last league win, yet both had strong games to keep their name in the mix for senior selection. Braut continued to show an ability to dominate in the air and at ground level at Reserves level, while Perkins was busy throughout and kicked two goals, including an important one in the last quarter.

FIRST UP WIN FOR CONNOLLY

Subiaco’s 2017 Colts Captain Liam Connolly played his first game at Reserves level on Saturday, starting his Reserves career with a win. Connolly had an interrupted pre-season but continues to impress with his attitude towards the game and his teammates. Along with Connolly, recruit Jack Fletcher also had his first taste of victory with Subiaco.

ACCURACY MATTERS

For the third game this season Subiaco’s Reserves converted its forward chances at above 60%. This conversion ability was a key difference maker in the match, with the two sides having the same number of scoring shots, with Subiaco’s impressive conversion making an impact. In two of the side’s three wins, that strong conversion has been a pivotal reason behind success.

COLTS RECAP

Subiaco’s Colts suffered their second straight loss, faltering late against Peel in a four point loss.

Remarkably Subiaco led or were tied for the entire match, until Peel kicked the pivotal late goal with five minutes to go in the match, taking the lead for the first time in the process.

Despite some desperate attempts from the Subiaco Colts, they were unable to get the one last clean forward entry they needed to retake the lead, and slumped to a heartbreaking four point loss.

Tristan Hobley led the way for Subiaco with 26 possessions while Jacob Peletier had 23 possessions to continue his strong form of recent weeks.

Up forward Jack Mayo was dominant raking in seven marks and kicking 4.4 in an impressive forward display.

However despite the performances of Mayo, Hobley and Peletier, it was not quite enough, as Subiaco now look to regroup before taking on top side in the WAFL Colts, Perth next week.

GAME CHANGERS

HOBLEY THE CONSISTENT

While midfield teammates Luke Foley, Will and Liam Hickmott received a lot of the credit early in the 2018 WAFL season, the consistency of Tristan Hobley continues to shine. Hobley had a season high 26 possessions against Peel, collecting his fifth 20 possession game out of six matches to start the season.

KICK THE BALL

Zane Shellabear-Healy recorded the somewhat unusual stat line of, 23 possessions made up of 23 kicks in the game against Peel. Shellabear-Healy is proving to be a player that likes to use the foot more than the hand, with a 3:1 kick to handball ratio in his 10 game WAFL career.

MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR KICKS

Sam Di Francesco is making the most of his kicks at WAFL Colts level. After making his debut against West Perth and not registering a kick, all three of Di Francesco’s kicks on Saturday resulted in scores as the young tall kicked two goals, one behind from three kicks.
