Memory Lane - Round 3 Flashback

Our weekly trip down memory lane this week heads to Round 3 and some of the fond Subiaco memories and famous Subiaco games in history.

 

Round 3 has proven to be a round where Subiaco has had some big wins, some big individual games and one thriller that was memorable to all those who attended.

Round 3, 1997

-- Subiaco 182 d 35 Peel Thunder –

Peel made their historic entry into the WAFL in 1997, with the first meeting between Subiaco and Peel resulting in a 147 point win to the Lions. The game was dominated by Subiaco throughout, keeping Peel scoreless in the second quarter as they built a 71 point lead at the half. Subiaco would keep on rolling in the second half as they kicked 14 goals to three on their way to their fourth biggest winning margin in club history. A host of players who had or would go on to have AFL careers, were big contributors to the win with Todd Breman kicking seven goals, Derek Kickett five goals and Michael Braun four goals.

 

Round 3, 2006

-- Subiaco 154 d 88 Perth –

Round 3 of the 2006 WAFL season brought about a big win as Subiaco continued on its way to the 2006 premiership. Subiaco kicked eight straight in the first quarter and went on to record a dominant 66 point win over Perth. The win came on the back of four massive performances from Matt Priddis, Mark Haynes, Caine Haynes & Josh Wooden who all racked up 30 or more disposals, combining for 132 disposals between them. Sam Larkins kicked five goals and David Maplestone kicked four goals to spearhead the Lions up forward.

 

Round 3, 1995

-- Subiaco 103 d 99 South Fremantle --     

Round 3 of 1995 saw Subiaco go the distance with South Fremantle before prevailing in a tight final quarter tussle. This tight encounter was a quarter by quarter battle as the two teams were no further than 10 points apart at the end of any quarter. Heading into the last, Subiaco were leading by two points and despite the lead changing hands throughout a tight final quarter, it was Subiaco who would be four points in front when the final siren sounded. This win was sparked by three goal games from Paul Ridley and Luke Toia.

 

Round 3, 1988

-- Subiaco 174 d 65 Swan Districts –

30 years ago in Round 3 of 1988, Subiaco produced an outstanding performance in a 109 point win over Swan Districts. This big win was the most dominant of the 1988 season for the Lions, with the 109 point margin their biggest win of the 1988 premiership winning season. Todd Breman and Brad McDougall would score a combined 13 goals in the victory with Breman kicking seven and McDougall kicking six.

 

Round 3, 1986

-- Subiaco 177 d 110 Perth --    

As far as individual performances are concerned, Warren Dean’s round 3 performance was one of the best the club has ever seen. On this day Warren took an incredible 20 marks which is the most by any Subiaco player in the club’s history and 3rd all time in WAFL history. Subiaco would win the game by 67 points on the back of this massive performance. Warren also tallied 21 disposals and booted six goals in this incredible individual display.
