Memory Lane - Round One Moments

In a new weekly feature for 2018, Subiaco will be taking a look back down memory lane with some of the great memories from each round of the WAFL season from years gone by.

 

Today, just two days out from our first game against East Perth at Leederville Oval, the mind gets cast back to famous round one matches of years past.

 

Round 1, 1968

Subiaco 24.8.152 v Swan Districts 14.18.102

In round 1 of the 1968 WAFL season, forward Austin Robertson Jr. produced an all-time club record performance when he scored 13 goals in a game. The 13 goals that he scored in this game was the equal most goals scored by an individual player in a single game at that time. Austin would eventually top this in round 21 of the same year with the current record of 15 goals.

 

Round 1, 1990

Subiaco 28.16.184 v East Perth 1.13.79

Subiaco started the 1990 season in fine form as they amassed a top 10 club score of 28.16 in defeating East Perth by 105 points at East Perth’s then home of Perth Oval. Despite trailing by 13 points at quarter time, Subiaco stormed ot the lead in the second quarter and powered away kicking an impressive 25 goals to six after the quarter time break.

 

Round 1, 2016

Subiaco 12.10.82 d Peel Thunder 10.14.74

After winning the 2015 premiership, Subiaco’s opening game in 2016 was a huge test as the Lions took on a Thunder side boasting 18 Fremantle listed players. After trailing at half time, Subiaco powered to the front with a five goal to one third quarter and held on to the victory in a tight final quarter. Leigh Kitchin had 32 possessions and Kyle Halligan kicked six goals for Subiaco.

 

Round 1, 2008

Subiaco 19.12.126 d South Fremantle 12.14.86

Subiaco’s quest for a third straight premiership in 2008 started at Fremantle Oval under lights against South Fremantle. After a tight start Subiaco kicked eight goals to three in the third quarter, which proved to be the difference in the match. Blake Broadhurst kicked six goals to spearhead the Lions as they started their quest for a hat-trick of flags.

 

Round 1, 1973

Subiaco 16.11.107 d Swan Districts 13.7.85

The 1973 WAFL season is one that lives long in the memory for all Lions fans that were there to see it, as this was the year that the club broke their 49 year premiership drought. This campaign began with great win over  Swan Districts. The boys lead at every term and were good enough to hold off the last quarter fight back by the Swan Districts. Austin Robertson and Dennis Blair each kicked three goals in the win.
