"Outside the Locker Room" continues Subiaco focus of player welfare

Subiaco will next week see the second in their “Outside the Locker Room” series of seminars and workshops, as the club continues to commit to the importance of developing Subiaco’s players off field as well as on field.

“Outside the Locker Room” is a welfare and education program for players, coaches and volunteers associated with the Subiaco Football Club as the club continues to focus on the wellbeing and mental health of its team alongside the physical health of those involved with the club.

Over the 2018 season, Subiaco’s players and coaches will be involved in four sessions ranging across topics in gambling, alcohol, drugs, mental health, nutrition, online and social media, with all players to be given expert advice on these areas specifically relating to a state league football program like that of the WAFL.

After over 150 people were in attendance at the program launch in January, this month’s session will see the players workshop focus on illicit drugs and drug addiction.

“Outside the Locker Room” is a unique program which has been tailored for the needs of current generations of players with some of the key program data and deliverables provided courtesy of a free downloadable app.

Recent studies have shown that a football club’s reach is significant and extends beyond players, coaches and volunteers within the club, as for each player a football club reaches 10 people in their community.

For this reason, football clubs and “Outside the Locker Room” hopes to have significant social impact on the community associated with the Subiaco Football Club, tackling wider community issues including depression, alcohol and drug addiction, bullying and domestic and community violence.

2018 is the first step in what the club hopes will be a longstanding partnership with “Outside the Locker Room” with further plans to be put in place to assist in the roll out of similar programs to community clubs, junior clubs and schools within the Subiaco district.

With further access to other associations such as the Australian Counselling Association and Lifeline, the partnership with “Outside the Locker Room” is seen as a crucial one as the club continues to promote healthy living and healthy mind.

The club is currently engaging with community businesses who have an interest in supporting and offering sponsorship towards this program, with all additional funds provided allowing the club to be able to further enhance and develop the program to other community clubs.
