2017 Blakemore Medal Preview

The Subiaco D-League will cap off their remarkable 2017 season, when their best & fairest player is crowned at the Outridge Medal on Wednesday September 28, at the Subiaco Sports Bar.
Despite falling as low as seventh position throughout the season, the Lions never gave up and managed to fire themselves into the Grand Final, where they defeated South Fremantle to the tune of 19 points.
THE CONTENDERS
CHAD BARNS
In only his second season of senior WAFL football, Barns has elevated himself to be a solid contributor for the Lions. He played 22 games out of a possible 24, and he averaged 13 possessions, three tackles and two marks, showcasing why the North Beach junior is such a highly rated player at the Lions. He had magnificent outings against Perth in round 2 (11 possessions, two marks & two tackles), and against Claremont in round 6 (12 possessions & three tackles).
MATTHEW BOGENSPERGER
Despite playing just 12 games, the reigning Blakemore Medallist is still a contender in 2017. He finished third in the Prendergast Medal with 30 votes, after he averaged 30 possessions, four inside 50s, four marks, and three tackles in 2017. His best games came against Peel Thunder in round 4 (39 possessions, five marks, five inside 50s, four tackles & a goal), Perth in round 12 (34 possessions, six inside 50s, & five tackles) and round 16 (42 possessions, nine inside 50s & two goals), East Perth in round 13 (37 possessions, six inside 50s & two goals), and East Fremantle in round 19 (38 possessions, five inside 50s & a goal).
MCKENZIE LAWRENCE
The former Colts Captain has had an excellent first year of senior football, playing 23 out of a possible 24 games. At Subiaco he ranked fourth for possessions (303 at an average of 13 per game), second for tackles (105 at an average of five per game), and was in the top 15 for marks (41 at an average of two per game). His notable games came against East Perth in round 5 (19 possessions, four marks, & three inside 50s) and round 23 (20 possessions, six inside 50s, and five tackles).
DANIEL LEACH
The Brigades FC product was a star for the Lions in his debut season, finishing in the top 15 for the Prendergast Medal with 14 votes. He collected the most possessions by a Subiaco player (436 at an average of 20 per game), laid the most tackles (122 at an average of six per game), and took the ninth most marks by a Lion (47 at an average of two per game). His dominant outings were against Perth in round 2 (24 possessions, six tackles, four inside 50s & a goal), Peel in round 11 (25 possessions, seven tackles, three inside 50s & a goal), East Perth in round 13 (25 possessions, eight tackles, & five inside 50s) and round 23 (24 possessions, & five tackles), West Perth in round 15 (24 possessions & a goal), Claremont in round 17 (26 possessions, & seven tackles), and East Fremantle in round 19 (20 possessions & 11 tackles).
JACOB MILLER
The 2016 WA U18s representative showcased why he is one of Subiaco’s highly rated youngsters with a brilliant first year of senior WAFL football. He played all 24 games, and averaged 14 possessions, three marks and two tackles, and booted three goals, stationed on the half-back flank. At Subiaco he ranked third for possessions, second for marks, and twelfth for tackles. He starred against East Perth in round 23 (15 possessions, six inside 50s & five marks), and Claremont in the Preliminary Final (18 possessions, six marks, and five tackles).
