Subiaco Great Haydn Bunton Snr Elevated to Legend at WA Football Hall of Fame

In an emotional WA Football Hall of Fame event held on historic Subiaco Oval last night, Subiaco great, Haydn Bunton Snr was elevated to Legend status of WA Football.
Bunton Snr was represented and saw the award accepted by his son, Haydn Bunton Jnr. In a somewhat ironic twist, Bunton Jnr already had the standing of Legend, and it was his father that was joining him in rare company as one of only a select few Legends of the game in WA.
Bunton Snr spent four years with the Subiaco Football Club between 1938 and 1941 playing in 76 games and kicking over 200 goals for the club.
Renowned as a great runner and ball winner, Bunton’s goal kicking exploits were even more impressive while at Subiaco kicking regular bags of five goals or more.
Bunton won the Sandover Medal three times in this four-year period, in 1938, 1939 and 1941; also winning Subiaco’s best and fairest award in all three seasons as well.
Not just a great footballer, Bunton was also a highly regarded leader and teacher of men as he coached and captained the club in these same years of 1938, 1939 and 1941.
About the only disappointment of Bunton’s time spent at the Subiaco Football Club was the lack of finals appearances with Subiaco not making finals in any of the four years Bunton spent at the club.
Bunton remains one of only five players to have won three Sandover medals and his induction as a Legend of the WA game is long overdue. Along with his three Sandover medal wins, Bunton won three Brownlow medals, the only man to achieve these dual feats.
Bunton Snr and Bunton Jnr were both inducted into the WA Football Hall of Fame in its inception at 2004 before Bunton Jnr was elevated to legend in 2010. Now with Bunton Snr elevated, they are the only father-son duo to be bestowed with one of the greatest honours in football.
