WAFL: Lions take down Eagles, move to second on ladder

Tuesday, August 15, 2023 - 1:08 PM

Subiaco overcame an accurate West Coast, winning by 69 points at Leederville Oval on Sunday August 13.

After an early burst from the Eagles, the Lions settled into the match before overwhelming their opposition in the second half.

Subiaco kicked 13 goals after half time to West Coast’s six, winning the game 22.19 (151) to 13.4 (82).

Ben Golding was important when the game was up for grabs, with 13 disposals and five marks to go with two goals.

Taj Schofield was also busy in the middle of the ground, gathering 25 touches and kicking three majors.

Ben Sokol also kept his Bernie Naylor Medal chances alive, kicking five goals.

The win moves the Lions to second on the ladder, putting them in a good position to secure a double chance in 2023.

Subiaco were forced to make a late change, with Josh Robbins coming into the side after Max Walters was injured in the warm up.

The Eagles were the first to get on the scoreboard, with Shannon Lucassen kicking his first goal of the day.

Not to be deterred, the Lions responded immediately through Ryan Borchet, who snapped truly for his side’s first major.

West Coast continued to challenge Subiaco, kicking another major to give themselves an 11-point lead.

Three goals prior to quarter time got the home side the momentum.

It was all going the Lions’ way, until Lucassen popped up again, kicking three in a row to give his side back the lead.

Subiaco needed to continue to fight, and it came with Liam Hickmott and Stef Giro winning the ball out of the midfield.

It helped the side get repeat entries inside 50, leading to multiple scores.

With a three-goal lead at half time, the Lions continued to push, with only their inaccuracy in front of goal preventing the score from blowing out.

However, there were enough major scores to cause enough separation.

The last quarter saw the Lions kick away, kicking the last five goals of the game to complete the win.
