WAFL: Round 16 Match Preview vs East Perth

Friday, July 28, 2023 - 9:27 AM by Matt Paddick

Leederville Oval is set to play host to a battle of finals-like intensity, when Subiaco takes on East Perth on Saturday July 29.

It’s set to be an exciting clash, with both teams looking to build momentum as we draw nearer to September.

Both teams will be giving it all for the North Perth Community Bank Cup.

FORM

Subiaco last week bounced back from consecutive losses to get a much needed win over Perth.

The clash saw the Lions get out to an early lead to help them to a 79-point win.

Losses against Claremont, Peel Thunder, and Swan Districts threatened to derail their season, but Subiaco remains in the top five after doing the work earlier in the season.

Sitting in fourth on the WAFL ladder, a win would close the gap between themselves and top spot.

Meanwhile, the Royals have been one of the form teams of the competition.

They’ve won their last eight games, and their last blemish was a loss to South Fremantle in round six of this season.

It means the Lions are in for a tough assignment, but the challenge will hold them in good stead going forward.

LAST TIME THEY MET

Back in round two, East Perth got the chocolates, winning by 23 points against Subiaco at Leederville Oval.

With the Lions still finding their rhythm, the Royals went out guns blazing, kicking 12 goals in the first half to set up the win.

Zac Clarke was the Lions’ best on the say, with 42 hit outs and 21 disposals.

ONE TO WATCH

Facing arguably the competition’s best midfield in East Perth, Subiaco will need to match them at the source in order to get the four points.

A calm head will be needed to help guide the young engine room.

Skipper Leigh Kitchin’s role will be important, given his 159 games of WAFL experience.

He won’t shy away from the contest, and will lead from the front come Saturday.
