Subiaco’s Laverton experience a success for all involved

Subiaco has made its presence known in the Goldfields region, after key personnel made the trip to Laverton.

Laverton is a town 350 kilometres north-east of Kalgoorlie, with a population of about 400 people.

However, there is a rich history of culture, which the Subiaco Football Club was privileged to witness.

There were cultural learnings, a bush day out, and some football throughout the weekend.

Talent Manager Stuart Berryman said it’s important for WAFL clubs to show support to the regions.

“There’s a bit of a responsibility to help the upcoming youth in the area,” he said.

“Football is a great vehicle to drive some learnings not only in sport, but in life.

“If we can help build programs out there so kids have a bit of a pathway, the footy club has a responsibility to do so.”

Football clinics were also run, through the Stephen Michael Foundation, where the kids in the area got to learn skills and play a few games.

Caylon Seelander comes to the club from Laverton, and has featured in not only the Colts side, but the state 16s.

His pop Marty is part of the Pakaanu Aborignal Corporation in Laverton, who helped coordinate the activities throughout the week.

Berryman said it was an awesome experience.

“We learned about the people, the country out there, and some stories,” he said.

“We did some activities out in the bush with the kids from the Laverton School.

“They were doing braids, face painting, making stuffed animals, and damper.”

The community in Laverton was very welcoming, according to Berryman.

He said it was memorable to be immersed in the culture.

“They’re teaching you a lot about their culture and they're open and happy for all of us to come out there and take part in their lifestyle,” Berryman said.

“They make you feel like one of them.”
