WAFL: Subiaco take four points in thriller with Swans

A frantic final few minutes has seen Subiaco hold on for a four-point victory against Swan Districts in a thriller at Leederville Oval on Saturday May 27.After overcoming a 20-point deficit, the Lions led by as much as 12 in the last quarter.

The Swans continued to surge, with Subiaco’s backline working overtime to prevent major scores against them. After the Lions conceded just one goal in the final term, a mark from Swan Tom Edwards set up a shot after the siren.

He wasn’t able to convert for a goal, giving Subiaco the 8.9 (57) to 7.11 (53) win. Galen Savigni provided plenty of run and carry from the backline, with three inside 50s from his 13 disposals.

Meanwhile, Henry Berenger performed strongly in the backline to help the Lions take the four points. Subiaco started off on the back foot, with the Swans getting a fast start. After kicking the first two goals of the match, Aidan Clark kicked truly from a tight angle to make it three in a row for the visitors.

Not to be deterred, the Lions got to work shortly after, with young gun Koltyn Tholstrup kicking truly for his first goal. Subiaco looked a better composed side in the second term, although turnovers from both teams were in surplus throughout the first half.

Corey Hitchcock kicked a nice set shot to spur the Lions, before Swan Jesse Palmer hit back with a goal of his own. Although the Swans continued to press, Subiaco's backline was good enough to hold them up.

The momentum was with the Lions heading into half time, with Jack Mayo kicking truly to reduce the margin. Subiaco got on a roll in the third term, with Ben Sokol kicking his first goal of the match.

Soon after, Angus Dewar burst out of the backline into space, with the play ending in Stef Giro scoring a goal to give the Lions the lead. However, the Swans managed back to back goals, putting Subiaco on the back foot heading into three quarter time.

The Lions caught fire in the final term. Ryan Borchet, Max Walters, and Sokol all kicking majors to give Subiaco a 10-point lead. The home side had chances to ice the game, but they couldn't take full advantage. The Swans hit back, kicking a goal before missing late chances, sealing the Lions win.
