Subiaco’s coaching staff will be bolstered by one of its own in season 2022, adding former player Scott Hancock to its ranks.

Hancock joined the Lions as a player ahead of the 2015 season, and became a premiership player that same year.

He will be the forwards coach for this season, taking over from Paul Vines.

While he’s been out of the system for a few years, Hancock told SubiacoFC.com.au the foundation created in the early 2000s is still prevalent within the current group of players.

“A lot of the guys that I played with would always refer back to that era and how it started to move on through the playing group,” he said.

“The culture, the values, and the way in which guys go about their football is very similar to when I played.

“That's why I'm really proud of this group and this club.”

The 29-year-old continued, saying the attitude was prevalent throughout the football club.

“We’re still referring back to that era of those great coaches and great players,” he said.

“You can still see that through Beau [Wardman], the coaching group, Kitch [Leigh Kitchin], and the playing group.”

Hancock has experience when it comes to coaching, as the player development officer with the Western Force.

He gained experience in the coaches box during his playing days while he was injured.

He said he was able to get a sense of what it takes to be a good coach, learning from past coaches including Jarrad Schofield.

He believed his strength is in building relationships with the playing group, and being able to relate to them having been in their position.

Coaching was something Hancock always had an interest in and hoped his background, along with his strategic knowledge of the game, could help the group succeed this season.

When asked about the current playing group, he said he’s been impressed by the attitude of the players.

“We've adjusted a few things for this season, and the guys have really latched on,” he said.

“I'm really seeing them start to flourish through training and preseason games.”
