WAFLW: Round 2 Match Preview vs Claremont

Thursday, February 24, 2022 - 12:55 PM by Matt Paddick

Subiaco Lions are looking to bounce back from their round one loss when they take on Claremont Tigers at Leederville Oval on Sunday, February 27.

It will be the Lions first home game for 2022, with the clash set to begin at 2pm.

It’s set to be a fiery contest, with some of WAFLW’s big names to go head to head.

FORM

The Lions had a strong start to their season 2022 campaign, albeit without the four points in hand.

They led for the majority of the match, with an end-to-end Peel Thunder goal in the final minute causing a one-point loss for Subiaco.

There were strong performances around the ground, with Jayme Harken picking up a game-high 20 disposals, while Tarni Golisano was influential with 19 touches of her own.

The Tigers were strong in their first match, taking a 52-point win over last year’s grand finalist Swan Districts.

It was a big defensive effort from Claremont, conceding just eight points for the match, while individually Ella Smith looked to threaten with 23 disposals.

LAST TIME THEY MET

Subiaco fought tooth and nail against Claremont in an effort to advance through to week two of last year’s WAFLW finals.

In a low scoring contest, Caitlin Walker and Jess Ritchie were a couple of standouts in the contest, with the Lions taking a three-point win over the Tigers.

Subiaco have won the past three matches against Claremont, and will look to keep the streak going this weekend.

ONE TO WATCH

Subiaco has been flagged by experts as one of the clubs who has recruited well over the offseason, and it was easy to see why when fans saw Amy Mulholland make her debut last week.

Recruited from Wembley in the Perth Football League after a stellar 2021 season, Mulholland showed she is up to the level, with 19 disposals and two goals in her first game for the Lions.

The 28-year-old showed her versatility, running through the midfield and up forward, and had her skills on full display with a left-foot snap for goal, as well as a right foot set shot.

Coach Michael Farmer ahead of the season put her up as one of the exciting prospects the club has for 2022.
