Giro settling into life as a Lion

One of Subiaco’s new recruits Stefan Giro said he’s eager for round one to come around where he hopes to run out in the maroon and gold for the first time.

The 22-year-old comes to the club after four seasons at the Fremantle Dockers, where he played 14 AFL matches.

He said his time at the club so far has been a great experience.

“It’s been really good, I’m loving it,” he said.

“The boys have been unreal and I’ve really loved coming to training so far.

“I just really can’t wait to get into games.”

After his time at the Dockers came to an end, Giro had no shortage of options in regard to his playing future.

Multiple clubs in the WAFL and in his native South Australia offered him the chance to continue his career.

It came as no surprise, given his dominant last three matches to finish off the 2021 WAFL season, where he averaged 25.7 disposals to show the impact he can have on the contest.

He said his decision to stay in WA was an easy one, but it was the culture at Subiaco which appealed to Giro the most.

“The players were a really welcoming group straight away,” he said.

“Even when I played against them, you could see they’re a really tight group.

“When I mentioned I was considering coming to the club, a lot of the boys got around me really quick.”

His time at Fremantle was riddled with injury, undergoing recovery for an ACL tear and a syndesmosis injury during his time there.

He said his body is holding up well, and his ability to have a full preseason had helped him stay in good touch.

Although still young in his career, Giro said he hoped his experience at the highest level will help the team maintain their high standards for the upcoming season.

When asked about his own game, he said he had a clear mindset for 2022.

“A hardworking player that competes all day,” he said.

“My running has been a strength of mine and is something I’ve always prided myself on.

“Hopefully I can help the boys get a few wins.”

Giro is balancing his football with a role at Murdoch University, while also completing his business and sports management studies at Deakin University.
