WAFLW Prelim Finals Preview v Swan Districts

Thursday, June 24, 2021 - 9:25 AM by Alice Miller

Pending whether they book their spot in the big dance, Subiaco have their most important game this year on Sunday in a battle of all battles against Swan Districts in the preliminary final with bounce down at 2:30pm. A game of its magnitude,  both teams will be throwing everything at it in their final chance to fill the spot alongside Peel in the Grand Final.

FORM
Subiaco are one game into their third consecutive finals campaign three years in a row after they plunged themselves past Claremont and a game closer to the ultimate prize. Subiaco held off the Tigers in close one and brought the signs of a final’s pressure built game. The Lions finished with three wins to round off the season, one of which being the team who is awaiting the winner of this week’s prelim in the Grand Final, Peel, by more than two goals. Subi built their way through the season to get them here so will be giving it everything and more against a team who will look to do the same.

OPPONENTS FORM
Swan Districts were guaranteed a spot in the finals early on in the season when they got off to a perfect start and eventuated to only falling short on two occasions (including finals) both of which from Peel. Swans failed to score a goal for 11 scoring shots 0.1 (11) in a disappointing finals performance, whereas Peel taking more of their opportunities 2.4 (16). For a season that was near as good as it gets, last week’s loss to the Thunder would have dampened the mood and brought about some doubts for if they were to make it to the grand final they’d have to face their foes once again.

GOAL KICKERS
AFLW star Hayley Miller continued to show her experience last week including kicking one of the two goals for the afternoon, Amy Hunt with the other. Hunt finished third on the goal kicking leaderboard for season 2021 with 16.12 in 15 games. Holly Hyder, Kia Buckley and Hayley Corlett were the three goal scorers for Subiaco when these to sides played each other in round 12.

LAST TIME THEY MET
Subiaco had the gut wrenching one-point loss against Swans in round 12 kicking 3.4 (22) to 3.5 (23). The game was dry of scoring after half time and the extra minor score that the Swans obtained in the second term was the most crucial point of the game as it defined the result in the end. Last time they played each other in the big games was the second week of finals in 2019 when Swans made a 45-point statement in the prelim and put and end to Subi’s finals series.

Make your way to Steele Blue Oval to cheer on the Womens as they bring their best in the hopes of making it to back to back Grand Final appearance.
