AFL Draft Watch - Subiaco Football Club

Monday, November 18, 2019 - 1:46 PM

Since 1981, the Subiaco Football Club has produced 75 players who have been drafted into the VFL/AFL.

In 2019, the Lions have three players who could potentially be drafted onto an AFL list.

Below are their profiles;

MITCHELL GEORGIADES

The son of former Subiaco and Footscray forward John Georgiades, Mitch missed all of the 2019 season with a quad injury. However, he had shown enough as a bottom-ager last year to earn a national combine invitation. In four games for the Sandgropers at last year’s National Championships, he booted 3 goals and averaged 10 possessions, 4 marks and 2 tackles with his best performance coming against the Allies (13 possessions, 3 marks and 2 goals). He also showed promising signs for Subiaco’s Colts team, where he averaged 13 possessions, 6 marks and booted 8 goals across six games – and was a pivotal figure in the Colts’ premiership triumph over Swan Districts with 9 possessions, 5 marks and a goal. As a key forward, Georgiades is comparable to Hawthorn’s Jack Gunston – both are athletic, skilful, seen as respected leaders amongst their peers, read the play well, and have good set shot routines.

NICHOLAS MARTIN

The Noranda Junior is a medium-sized forward who is capable overhead and reads the play well. As a member of the WA U18s State Team, Martin averaged 10 possessions and 3 marks across three games. And in four games for Subiaco’s Colts team, Martin booted 9 goals and averaged 21 possessions, 6 marks and 2 tackles with his best performances coming against and Swan Districts in round five (24 possessions, 9 marks and 3 goals) and South Fremantle in round 11 (17 possessions and 4 goals). Martin also played seven games for the Lions’ Reserves team where he kicked 10 goals and averaged 12 possessions and 4 marks. His best performances came against Claremont in round 14 (10 possessions and 3 goals) and East Perth in round 20 (16 possessions, 8 marks and 3 goals).

BEN SOKOL

The 23-year-old is arguably the most exciting mature aged prospect from Western Australia after he claimed the Bernie Naylor Medal with 60 goals from 20 games. He was also instrumental in Subiaco’s premiership triumph over South Fremantle with 15 possessions, 8 marks and 6 goals to win the Simpson Medal. He finished seventh in the Sandover Medal (with 16 votes) and sixth in the Outridge Medal (with 500 votes) after some stunning performances against East Perth (15 possessions, 13 marks and 6 goals), Perth (21 possessions, 13 marks and 7 goals), Swan Districts (22 possessions, 12 marks and 6 goals), and West Perth (16 possessions, 11 marks and 6 goals). Sokol is athletic, skilful, strong, powerful, explosive and smart – traits that make him a dangerous threat inside attacking 50.
