Round 11 Recap

Monday, June 24, 2019 - 2:29 PM

The Subiaco Lion’s atoned for their Round 6 loss by beating South Fremantle in wet conditions at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Saturday by 33 points. The top of the table clash victory means Subiaco now sit on top of the League Ladder with a 1 game buffer and healthy percentage over the Bulldogs.

A 5-goal burst in the 3rd quarter put the game to rest as the Lion’s opened up a 46-point lead into the last break. Jack Beverley kicked the first two goals of the game for Subiaco while Ryan Borchet kicked his 3 goals solely in the 2nd quarter.

Ben Newton, Kyal Horsley and Max Walters found plenty of ball through the midfield while Lachlan Delahunty continued his good vein of form with another 24 disposals, 33 hit outs and a goal display. Angus Litherland, in his 50th game, Michael Braut and Jordan Lockyer were all strong in defence with the latter keeping in form and League Goal Kicking Leader Mason Shaw to 1 goal which came late in the game.

Ben Reid became the 4th Lion to debut in 2019 and his game ended early to a bad cork in the first quarter. Despite trying to run the game out with the injury, he would finish the game early in the last quarter.

Subiaco will now head to Joondalup Arena to take on the in-form Falcons next Saturday in the 2018 WAFL Grand Final rematch at 2:15pm.

COLTS RECAP

Subiaco Colts have secured their best win of the season and made it 2 wins in a row after defeating South Fremantle on the weekend at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

Due to inclement weather the instruction for Subiaco was simple “Hit the ground running and apply some scoreboard pressure early.”

The players responded and put on 5 goals in the first term and kept South goalless. Tyler Broughton and Nick martin where lively up forward whilst Ben Golding and Abraham Clinch where controlling the midfield.

The second term was a lot tighter contest with South slowing the game down and making it an arm wrestle. Xavier Peacock was dominant in the ruck for Subiaco but its midfield couldn’t capitalise on getting first use and to South’s credit they sharked their fair share of his tap work.

After the main break Subiaco again hit the ground running having 8 scoring shots to 1 and extended the lead past 8 goals. Jed Kemp continued accumulating the ball in the middle of the ground but his tackling pressure was the catalyst for Subiaco’s dominance around the contest.

The final term was a mirror image of the 3rd with Subiaco dominating play but failing to capitalise on the scoreboard. Nick Martin showed his class in the final term having 5 shots on goal and why he belongs in the State team kicking 4 goals and collecting 17 disposals for the match. Subiaco had 9 individual goal kickers for the match which is a credit to the players and coaching staff after weeks of focusing on team first football.

GAME CHANGERS

Nick Martin collected 17 possessions kicked 4 goals which could have quite easily been more. Great to see him respond after missing out on state selection.

Tyler Broughton produced his best game for Subiaco gathering 19 disposals, 7 tackles and kicking 3 goals. His pressure in the forward line was noticeable and made life easier for his team mates.

Ben Golding is one of Subiaco’s emerging leaders who again showed why he was unlucky to miss out on State 18’s selection. Always hard in the contest and leads from the front. Ben has been very consistent of late and continues to be one of the premier midfielders in the Colts competition.
