Minor Grade Wrap - Round 13, 2018

Monday, July 2, 2018 - 6:59 AM

Subiaco Colts won their fourth straight game and eighth of the season to ensure for one night at least, that Subiaco would have the three top teams on the ladder, a feat not achieved this late in the season before by the Lions.

By the end of the weekend, the Colts had fallen to second while a poor second half was costly for the Reserves as they slipped to fourth in a jam packed top of the 2018 WAFL Reserves ladder.

COLTS RECAP

For the second time this year Subiaco Colts have won four straight matches, after a comprehensive victory over West Perth on Friday night.

A strong four quarter performance from the young Lions saw them extend their lead at every change, eventually running out 54 point winners.

The win elevated Subiaco to top spot and ensured that the Lions were top of the table in all three grades, having never achieved this so late in a season before.

The Subiaco victory was spearheaded by a dominant display from big man Xavier Peacock who was dominant in the ruck and up forward finishing with four goals and 39 hitouts.

Jordan Faraone kicked three goals and the WAFL Colts Leading Goalkicker Jack Mayo added two goals.

Youngsters Sandon Page and Jack McIntosh kicked two goals each as they both celebrated their first win as part of the Colts side.

Tristan Hobley was again the chief ball winner in the game with 29 possessions while Jacob Peletier finished with 27 possessions.

Next week Subiaco’s Colts face a mouth-watering battle with the Peel colts in a WAFL Colts top of the table showdown.

GAME CHANGERS

BIG MEN WIN FOOTY GAMES

Xavier Peacock produced a breakout performance, stamping his authority on the contest throughout with a dominant big man display. Peacock was the dominant ruckman on the night with 39 possessions while was the most dangerous forward threat as well, finishing with four goals. The ongoing improvement in Peacock’s game was seen in laying six tackles preparing to add his presence at ground level. A highly regarded junior, this was a performance that showed Peacock belonged as one of the best bigs in WAFL Colts football.

PELETIER’S BIG FIRST HALF

When the game was on the line in the first half it was the hard working Jacob Peletier who had the biggest influence. He collected 19 first half possessions and had a crucial hand in a number of Subiaco’s forward thrusts. Though he had a quieter second half, it was his big first half that helped set up the game for the Lions.

IMPRESSIVE DEBUT

WA State 16’s player Sandon Page made his WAFL colts debut on Friday night and showed impressive signs in game number one. Page kicked two goals and proved a lively presence up forward. Alongside Page, Jake McIntosh in his second game notched up win number one, adding two goals as well.

113 POINT TURNAROUND

Arguably the only bad performance of the Subiaco Colts season was in Round Six when West Perth comprehensively beat the Lions by 59 points. It was a massive 113 point turnaround from that last clash last month, with Subiaco showing greater intensity around the ball and showing better skill execution compared to that game. It was a sign of the added maturity of this Beau Wardman side, to bounceback from this poor performance.

FINAL

SUBIACO         3.4       6.6       10.11   14.14.98

WEST PERTH   0.2       2.4       3.6       6.8.44

BEST: Peacock, Peletier, Hobley, Faraone, Stainsby

GOALS: Peacock 4; Faraone 3; Mayo, McIntosh, Page 2; Stainsby 1.

RESERVES RECAP

For the second time in 2018, Subiaco’s Reserves were unable to maintain a second half lead against rivals West Perth, as the Falcons stormed from behind to win and climb over Subiaco on the Reserves ladder.

Subiaco’s Reserves led by five goals midway through the second quarter, however would kick just one more goal for the game from the 20 minute mark of the second quarter.

The Lions conceded five goals in the third quarter as West Perth firstly took, then built a lead and despite a desperate final quarter from Subiaco, they were unable to pull the deficit back.

As he has done throughout the majority of 2018, Daniel Leach led from the front in the midfield collecting 30 possessions and laying six tackles, while Travis Cleggett also worked hard for 23 possessions and five tackles.

Big man Andy Doyle continued his strong run of form with three goals from 12 possessions and five marks while David Ehlers also kicked two goals.

Subiaco face a must win battle for their top two chances, this coming Saturday against the Peel Reserves.

GAME CHANGERS

DÉJÀ VU

Back in Round Six, Subiaco led West Perth by two goals heading into the last quarter yet were overrun. Same opponent and the script was the same, as another big second half from West Perth saw the Falcons claim what had seemed an unlikely victory midway through the second quarter.

TACKLE LEADER

In his third game back from injury, Adam Cockie was again strong in and around the contest. Cockie finished with nine tackles and added 21 possessions for the Lions. Daniel Leach and Josh Underwood had six tackles on the day for the Lions.

FLETCHER MISSED

The game turned midway through the second quarter when Jack Fletcher went from the field following a collision with a West Perth opponent. Fletcher won a free kick in the incident, but that was little consolation as the injury clearly affected Subiaco on the day and threatens to derail the big man’s first Subiaco season after he was building nicely into some good form.

GRAHAM DEBUTS

19 year old Kambalda recruit Cameron Graham played his first game for Subiaco and showed enough promise to suggest with further experience and conditioning he could be a contributor for the Subiaco side. Graham finished with eight possessions, two tackles and a highlight reel goal.

FINAL

SUBIACO         4.2       7.6       7.10     8.11.59

WEST PERTH   1.3       5.6       10.8     11.15.81

BEST: Cockie, Leach, Cleggett, Beverley, Dennis.

GOALS: Doyle 3; D. Ehlers 2; Breman, Cockie, Graham 1.
