Memory Lane - Round 7 Memories

Thursday, May 17, 2018 - 2:02 PM

Round Seven has been a memorable one for Subiaco throughout history, with its highest ever score recorded in this round and a memorable draw among two of the highlights.

Saturday’s opponent Peel have been something of a whipping side of Subiaco in Round Seven with the Lions having won the three previous Round Seven encounters by an average winning margin of 131 points.

Other great performances in Round Seven include a career best haul for Mick Malone, a 10 goal haul from Brad Smith and 35 possessions for Greg Carpenter. Which rounds, find out here.

2008

Subiaco 207 d 50 Peel Thunder

In one of the most dominant displays ever produced by a Subiaco outfit, in round seven of 2008, the Lions amassed an incredible 62 scoring shots and 207 points thrashing a hapless Peel by 157 points. The 29.33.207 points scored on this day remains the most points ever scored by Subiaco in a game. Further the 157 point winning margin is the second highest winning margin in the club’s history. This match was played in Subiaco’s regional centre of Kalgoorlie, with local Lions fans from the Kalgoorlie region experiencing one of the sides greatest ever games. If not for inaccuracy, this could have been one of the highest scores ever recorded across the entire WAFL competition. Subiaco kicked 5.10 in the first quarter and an incredible 6.14 in the last quarter. The chief destroyer up forward in the win was Brad Smith who bagged 10 goals while Greg Broughton was best in the midfield with 22 possessions. A young Kyal Horsley wowed his home fans kicking four goals and having 19 possessions.

2010

Subiaco 164 d 50 Peel Thunder

As was the case two years prior, round seven produced a three figure win for Subiaco over Peel as the Lions thrashed the Thunder by 114 points. After a tight first quarter where only eight points separated the sides, Subiaco went on a blitz for the remaining three quarters kicking 19 goals to three after quarter time, including holding Peel to just one goal in the second half. A main factor in the win was the performance of Shaun Hildebrandt who had 36 disposals while Marc Webb and Chad Cossom each had 28 disposals. Blake Broadhurst also picked up 28 possessions and kicked 5.5 for the day in a dominant forward performance from the popular Lion. Adam Campbell also kicked five goals on the day for the Lions.

1978

Subiaco 166 d 141 East Fremantle

Round seven of 1978 saw forward Mick Malone produce one of the all time great forward performances, with 19 shots on goal for 11 goals, 8 behinds. Malone’s 11 goals was a career best and were the highlight of a high scoring match with Subiaco and East Fremantle combining for 307 points on an incredible 82 scoring shots. Neil Randall kicked four goals in the win as Subiaco overcame a five goal quarter time deficit with 20 goals in the final three quarters of the game. Subiaco would go on to be comfortable 25 point winners.

1986

Subiaco 109 d 106 Swan Districts

Having won five games to start 1986 and with opponents Swans having won just two games, it was expected to be an easy win for Subiaco in round seven of 1986. Instead a classic encounter was held at Bassendean Oval. After winning three out of the last four encounters against Swan Districts, Subiaco headed into this match with reasonable confidence they could get the job done again. Subiaco jumped nicely from the blocks and led by 10 points at quarter time and were 33 points in front at the final change. However Swan Districts came out all guns blazing in the last scoring 9.2 in the final term to close in on claiming an unlikely victory. Subiaco would eventually hold firm and had enough in tank to get over the line by three points. The close win came on the back of 35 disposals from Greg Carpenter and six goals from Todd Breman.

2001

Subiaco 62 v 62 West Perth

Subiaco’s only draw this millennium occurred back in round seven of 2001 as Subiaco and West Perth were locked on 62 points a piece when the final siren sounded up in Joondalup. After kicking a wasteful 1.6 in the first quarter Subiaco were punished by a West Perth side who kicked seven goals in the second quarter to build a handy 26 point half time lead. However an incredible defensive effort in the second half, saw the Lions defence hold the Falcons to just one goal and slowly the Lions inched back into the game. Subiaco’s two final quarter goals were enough to see them draw level with West Perth and that is how the day would finish up, knotted at 62. Andrew Wills kicked three goals and Brad Osborne two goals in the draw for Subiaco.
