Subiaco 16's to Honour 1988 Subiaco Premiership

Friday, March 2, 2018 - 12:29 PM

The Subiaco 16’s Talent Program will be honouring one of the past great Subiaco sides, by wearing the same design jumper as the 1988 Subiaco premiership team.

With 2018 marking the 30th anniversary of this premiership this was seen as the perfect occasion to educate the next generation of Subiaco players about the history of the club, including this popular premiership side coached by the great Haydn Bunton Jnr.

Talent Manager Michael Farmer who first proposed the idea said it was important that players coming into the Subiaco Football Club had an appreciation for all the players who had worn versions of the maroon and gold jumper.

“In many cases the 16’s Talent Program is the first strong affiliation that young players have with the football club and the loyal band of Subiaco fans,” Farmer said.

“To have our 16’s be able to both honour this past premiership side while also bringing back a jumper that holds great memories to so many fans and former players, it will hopefully just strengthen the bond that these players have with this proud club.”

A key link to the 1988 premiership side in this year’s 16’s Talent Program is through assistant coach Kevan Sparks, a premiership player from 1988.

Sparks has had an ongoing association with the Subiaco Football Club going back for over 30 years and he appreciates the effort that the club’s talent program is putting into recognising past generations and the history of the club.

“It is so important for football clubs to maintain their culture and have an appreciation of their history and for the club to make this link back to the 1988 premiership highlights how important Subiaco places its own culture and history,” Sparks said.

“The 1980’s Subiaco sides really built a culture amongst the Subiaco Football Club that has stood for over 30 years now and for young players to have an understanding of where our current club culture was developed is a significant thing.”

Subiaco’s 16’s side is in 2018 is coached by Tom Lowndes who continues to impress working with the development of the youngest members of the Subiaco Football Club.

You can see the Subiaco 16’s in action in their historic jumper commencing next Friday evening when they host rivals West Perth at Leederville Oval.
