Cavedon Appointed as D-League Coach

Subiaco is delighted to announce that Matt Cavedon has been appointed as the Head of Development and the club’s D-League Coach for the 2018 WAFL season.

Cavedon comes to Subiaco as a highly regarded leader and coach, who spent time working with St Kilda’s leadership program from 2015 to 2017 and had experience as a player with Frankston in the VFL and Queanbeyan in the NEAFL.

Last year Cavedon spent time with Scarborough in the WAAFL coaching alongside the Scarborough coach, former Subiaco great, Aidan Parker.

Outside of football Cavedon has had a strong background in leadership, having worked as an Engineering Manager with the Royal Australian Navy and Australian Defence Force. Along with wife Kate and their two children, Matt has now settled back in Perth and is looking forward to the challenge of working with Subiaco’s next generation of players.

“There was definitely a perception coming in that Subiaco had one of the strongest culture in the WAFL,” Cavedon said.

“I am really looking forward to working with Jarrad Schofield and seeing how behind closed doors the coaching group go about setting a culture of exceeding expectation.”

After winning the WAFL Reserves premiership last season with a stronger focus on the development of the club, Cavedon follows in the footsteps of the highly regarded outgoing premiership coach Andrew Lockyer.

The continued focus on development of Subiaco’s younger players saw debuts from Michael Braut, Adam Creeper and Ryan Vermeersch in 2017 while youngsters Ben Reid, Daniel Leach, Ryan Borchet and Jacob Miller were all instrumental in last year’s premiership success and loom likely to have an impact at league level in 2018.

For Cavedon ensuring that the development of the club is breeding good people is just as important as breeding good footballers.

“I am a big believer that football clubs have a critical role to play in making young men into good people,” Cavedon said.

“To ensure that young men leave our club as better people is crucial to me in a role of coach and leader.”
