Josh Deluca Rejoins Subiaco

Subiaco is delighted to announce that former premiership player Josh Deluca has committed to the club for the 2018 season.

A local Subiaco district product from the Sorrento-Duncraig Junior Football Club, Deluca returns to the club that gave him his first opportunity at WAFL level having graduated through the Subiaco colts in 2012 and 2013.

Deluca burst onto the WAFL scene with a memorable rookie campaign in 2014, playing 12 league games for Subiaco including a key role in the clubs 2014 premiership win over East Perth. Drafted by Fremantle at the subsequent 2014 AFL National Draft, Deluca went on to play four games with Fremantle before being delisted at the end of the 2017 season.

Deluca returns to Subiaco as a three time WAFL premiership player, having played in Peel’s last two premiership wins over Subiaco. Heading into 2018 Deluca will have the potential to join a rare group of players who have played in multiple WAFL premierships with multiple WAFL clubs.

“I’m confident that we will have a strong outfit in the WAFL again next year and really look forward to a successful year,” Deluca said.

“We have great players and leaders in Horse, Kitch, Dela and Phez; hopefully we can bring the cup back to the Lions in 2018”

After commencing his senior WAFL football career as predominately a small forward, the physically built Deluca has become a tough inside midfielder at WAFL level with an ability to play a number of roles both through the midfield and forward of centre. Deluca averaged over 20 possessions, five tackles and just under a goal a game at WAFL level in 2017 and looms as a crucial addition to the Subiaco midfield.

Subiaco had to fight off tough competition to claim the commitment of Deluca for 2018 with West Perth and South Fremantle among clubs that had expressed strong interest in the 21 year old. For Deluca it was a strong sign of his loyalty that he chose to turn down these lucrative offers to return back to the club.

“I came back to Subi because I love the club and the people involved,” Deluca said.

“Schoie is a great coach that gets the best out of his players, so I am really excited to work with him again along with the rest of the Subi players to build towards something special next year.

Subiaco Football Manager Daniel Vidovich said that ensuring Deluca returned to the club was one of the main goals of the Subiaco off-season and was delighted to secure the commitment ahead of pre-season training starting.

“Josh was a priority for the club as both a local player and a player that has grown into a standout player over the past five years,” Vidovich said.

“The experience he has gathered through the AFL system, we think Josh will add enormous value to our midfield group and will be a pivotal player for us heading into next season.”

Deluca joins fellow recruit Ben Newton in assisting to bolster Subiaco’s midfield ahead of the 2018 WAFL season.
