Edmund Rice Heroes

The Edmund Rice Centre Lions – WA’s premier multicultural football team were special guests at the weekends Subiaco FC home game against East Fremantle.

WAFL Little League was first introduced to WA in 1970 by Mr Alex Panton, a tireless and dedicated servant to junior football in Western Australia for 30 years.  Alex saw his first game in 1969 being played in South Australia. He believed the concept of Little League could work in WA and founded WAFL Little League in the following year in 1970. WAFL Little League now in its 42nd year gives 12 year-old "stars of tomorrow" the opportunity to play at half time in front of WAFL club crowds.

2016 is a first for the Subiaco FC with the Edmund Rice Lions formally invited to participate. Two teams of 12 players played on the main oval at Medibank stadium at half time with the Edmund Rice Centre Lions formally provided the same opportunities given to local district football clubs – the opportunity to play and profile at Subiaco FC’s WAFL Match.

In addition to match day playing opportunities players from the Edmund Rice Centre were provided a tour of the Subiaco FC facilities and the Edmund Rice Centre’s youth leaders were guests at the Presidents Luncheon.

12 year old Edmund Rice Lions coach Bonhuer Cubahiro spoke to the function about his experience in football.

The Edmund Rice Centre Mirrabooka was founded in 1998 to meet the growing needs of the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) community in Perth’s northern suburbs. The Edmund Rice Lions Program provides youth with a multicultural or refugee background with an opportunity to participate in and learn about the game of AFL. The program also acts as a pathway for integration into Australian society by linking players up with local community football clubs after a year in the program.

The Subiaco Football District is a proud supporter of the Edmund Rice Lions, providing assistance with teaching participants about our great game and transitioning them into community football by linking them up with local junior football clubs.

Subiaco Football Club’s very own, David Madut, is a product of the Edmund Rice Centre and their AFL Program, who after a year with the ER Lions went on to play Colts with the Kingsway Football Club before joining the Subiaco Colts team in 2012.
