Young Lions dream on

Subiaco’s Nicky Winmar side the Moordijt Lions have shot for the stars in 2016 under the direction of Community Engagement Coordinator and Subiaco player Adam Cockie.

The Lions made it to the Nicky Winmar Cup Grand Final and despite losing the penultimate game; six players were invited to the WA U15’s selection camp.

Mark Corbett, Ezekiel Bolton, Phil Stack-Green, Cameron Anderson, Christian Miller-Sabbioni and Levi Duyckers took part in the try-outs and Cockie was impressed with how they conducted themselves.

“It was a really exciting opportunity for these young players to show what they’ve got, said Cockie

“There were concerns on how well the boys would come together with minimal training but to their credit they played to their strengths and they were rewarded with recognition from state selectors.”

Two of the boys, Christian Miller-Sabbioni and Levi Duyckers, were offered the opportunity to represent Western Australia at the U15’s Carnival in Townsville; a National meet where the Black Swans went undefeated.

“The two boys selected for the WA side were really impressive at the National competition in Townsville,

“Miller-Sabbioni played really well at centre half-back and #1 ruck man Levi Duyckers performed strongly as the competition went on. “ Added Cockie

Christian Miller-Sabbioni was also recognised for his abilities as a play making back-man and was selected for the All Australian Boomerangs squad, which will compete at the U16’S National Carnival later this year.

“It was great to see Christian recognised further for his hard work. He’s also the grandson of ex-SFC football manager Jeff Lind so it’s nice to continue family connections with the Subiaco Football Club.” Said Cockie

Adam Cockie took the Community Engagement role in January when he returned from Melbourne to play for Subi and he’s excited with the programs’ results in such a short time.

“We really didn’t have a lot of time to get everything together so I’m proud of the players and staff Melanie Clark and Jesse Tippet for what we’ve been able to achieve,

“I’m hoping to continue offering opportunities for our young Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander players in the future. “ said Cockie
