Grimley to Essendon
Saturday, 06 February 2016
Subiaco's Sam Grimley is heading to the AFL earlier than expected and has signed with Essendon as the club's eighth top up player.
Grimley has been on the Bombers radar and trained with the club last week. The ex-Hawthorn key forward was signed earlier this morning and will play for Essendon in 2016.
The update is great news for the 2015 Frosty Miller Medallist who moved West in hopes of re-entering the AFL. Subiaco Football Manager Daniel Vidovich spoke with the West Australian on the issue earlier in the week.
“If he gets a contract, then we’re 100 per cent behind him,” said SFC Football Manager Vidovich
“It would only be selfish reasons by us for wanting him to stay here, but we’re supportive of him and what’s best for his footy."
The loss of Grimley puts a dent in Subiaco's tall stocks but the Lions have depth coming from a few areas.
The Lions won the 2015 Grand Final with the ruck tandem of Lachlan Delahunty and Clancy Wheeler, two key position players.
They also have young forwards Kyle Halligan, Ryan Vermeersch, James Garcia & Michael Wood who will develop with more opportunities.
Young rucks Sean Bradley and Dave Madut have also had good pre-seasons and will be in the selection mix.
