SFC 2015: Round Five Preview

An early season blockbuster is in the making with Round Five’s clash against South Fremantle at Fremantle Oval.

The Bulldogs and Lions have started the season fast and sit next to each other on top of the WAFL ladder in the early stages.

Subiaco have looked dominant throughout portions of the season but are yet to string a four-quarter performance together. They’ll need to bring their A-game against a formidable Bulldogs side.

South Fremantle started the season with three wins but came un-done against a hungry Swan Districts outfit last week. With a solid mix of experienced veterans and exciting talent the Bulldogs are poised as a premiership threat in 2015.

This make’s Saturday’s fixture a tantalising one and we look at some factors that could change the outcome of the game.

Subiaco vice-captain Darren Rumble bursts away from South Fremantle's Ben Saunders

Although it’s always hard to predict the specific match-ups there’s no doubt Subiaco’s Darren Rumble and South Fremantle’s Ben Saunders will clash at some point on Saturday. Rumble is in his 13th season as a Lion and continues to be a rock of defence for Subiaco. Saunders was the leading goal-kicker in the WAFL last year and possesses a booming right boot. The two WAFL veterans both have important roles ahead of them in this table-topping clash.

The Lions will get their leading goal-scorer back with Shane Yarran returning from suspension. Yarran was also leading the WAFL in goals before a high bump on Will Schofield in the Good Friday derby landed him a week on the sideline. Subiaco will need the play and energy that Yarran brings to the forward line. It will also free up utility Bradley Stevenson to aid in the back-line and around the ground.

"All the players that play under me understand that they can be given different roles from week to week and I like to have players with versatility," said head-coach Jarrad Schofield on 91.3 SportFM.

"Stevenson was able to show that last week but with South Fremantle's forward-line I think we'll have to look to put him back this week and with Yarran coming back into our side."

The Lions will need to bring the intensity from the first bounce to eradicate their slow starting tendencies. Subi have only managed eight goals in first quarters this year, compared to 14 from their collective opponents. The Bulldogs however are one of the fastest starting teams and have the ability to create a buffer early. The first quarter outcome will be an indication of what Subiaco have learned in the past weeks and if they have the ability to drive early.
