They’re affectionately referred to as the ‘R’ Train, and Subiaco’s Reserves side has just one more stop to make.

The Lions will take on West Perth in the Grand Final at Patersons Stadium at 11:15am on Sunday.

The team’s numbers are the most impressive across all three grades in the WAFL this season, finishing the home and away season with 18 wins, only two losses and an unprecedented percentage of 226%. (The next best percentage across all grades was 167% belonging to Claremont’s colts.)

The Lions’ 56 point thumping of the Falcons in the second semi final has them as red hot favourites going into Sunday’s season finale.

At 28, Rob Forrest has already carved out a decorated WAFL career including two senior premierships in 2007 and 2008 plus a Reserves premiership in 2005.

This season Forrest was forced to undergo his second knee reconstruction and after 6 months of rehabilitation was able to return to the field in round 21.

Come Sunday, he’ll provide a very experienced head on some young shoulders.

“You never know if you’ll get another chance to represent the club on the last day of the season, you’ve just got to enjoy it as much as you can.” Forrest said.

Forrest cut his teeth during the Lions’ most successful period and sees similarities between the current playing group and the one that took the club to 6 senior Grand Finals in 7 years during the 2000’s.

“It’s just the mateship. It’s something we got to experience going through our careers, now these guys have that same unity coming through and if they stick together for a while the opportunities are endless for them.” Forrest said.

“I think if you want to have a look at who’s going to carry the club into the future you should definitely get down and watch the Reserves on Sunday.”

“Having both sides representing in the Grand Finals reflects on how well the list is going.”

“To have 50 players to try and fit into 22 spots essentially, it speaks volumes of where we’ve come from in 12 months.”

“Even the new guys, blokes who have only spent 12 months at the club have slotted in so well and bought into everything that we’re trying to achieve.”

“It’s so exciting to be out there playing with them they are just all out there enjoying their footy.”
