Colts finals gap closes
- Saturday, 23 August 2014
The opportunity to play finals has been dashed for the Colts with a 67-point defeat against South Fremantle at Fremantle Oval.
The Lions were out-played by the third placed Bulldogs who used the ball far better to gather 129 more disposals than the visitors.
With the loss leaving Subiaco stranded on 32 points and in sixth place, East Perth clinched the final top four spot with a 100+ belting of Peel Thunder.
Despite the disappointing defeat there were some stand-out performances for the Lions from players who showed great desire for the contest.
Greg Clark continues to be Subiaco’s most prominent midfielder with 26 touches and eight tackles against the Bulldogs. Connor Wilkinson was also lively in the centre with 12 hard fought possessions and eight tackles.
It was a tough day for the forward line with inconsistent delivery from the midfield resulting in only six majors. Debutant Luke Halligan made his mark with two majors in the first half and defender-turned-forward Corey Buscall slotted two set shots.
Key forward Ryan Vermeersch was missing due to pre-existing niggles but could be a chance to return against East Fremantle next week.
Debutant Luke Halligan had a lively start with two goals in the first half.
Esperance youngster Jak Cary loves playing against South Fremantle and this match-up was no exception. Cary was brilliant at reading the ball and carried the ball magnificently out of the backline in the second half in an attempt to reignite Subiaco’s charges. He finished with 12 touches and six defensive marks.
Another Halligan has been filtered into our Colts system with Luke Halligan the younger brother of Kyle getting the nod for his first game. Luke was very lively on a slow day for the Lions to kick two goals and provide great pressure.
Colts Captain Brennan Pearce was sidelined in the third quarter with an ankle injury that’s been pestering the defender for weeks. Pearce was taken out of the game to prevent further damage and will be a touch-and-go decision for next week’s season closer against the Sharks.
