Colts lose clash of cats

The Subiaco Colts have lost to the Claremont Tigers by 49 points despite a lively performance from forward Jeremy Woodley.

The 17 year old has been building form in the last month and was on target against the Tigers to kick four majors.

Subi desperately needed a win against the Tigers to reinforce their finals hopes in 2014 with the loss leaving them dangerously adrift with two games remaining.

The loss sees Subiaco drop to sixth place but only two points out of the top four.

Subiaco’s midfield has had some consistency in personnel but struggled to get the ball against a committed Tigers side. Greg Clark was the leader in possessions with 22, followed by Max Walters (20 disposals) and Tim Edwards (18 disposals)

A highlight of the 49 point loss was the best on ground performance from Jack Beverley. The Sorrento-Duncraig youngster has been employed in the back line from coach Steve Armstrong and had another strong performance in the back six.

GAME CHANGERS

VERM ON WRAPS
Key forward Ryan Vermeersch has been blanketed on the goal front recently receiving extra attention from defensive groups. Vermeersch was double-teamed against the Tigers numerous times and has struggled to find the ball in dangerous areas. Only one major sees the big Esperance forwards’ goal-tally slow, but his presence in the forward is creating opportunities for players like Jeremy Woodley and Rhys McAlister.

IT’S IN THE WATERS

Brad Waters, the younger brother of league forward Rhys Waters, has been a standout for the Lions in 2014 and continues to further his abilities. Brad is a different kind of player than Rhys and serves as a silky outside midfielder that also provides great defensive pressure without the football. Waters had 19 touches in the loss.

BALL HUNTERS
Subiaco faced some stiff competition against Claremont’s second placed midfield with Jared Hardisty (33 disposals), Ryan Lim (27 disposals) and Isaac Baum (27 disposals) seeing plenty of the football. The next challenge for emerging midfielders like Max Walters and Greg Clark is to win the one on one battle out of the centre. Claremont dominated possessions 374 to to Subiacos 232.
