Heartbreaker

The Subiaco Colts have endured a heart-breaking 14 point loss at the hands of Perth despite leading for a majority of the game.

A failure to convert opportunities left the Lions vulnerable in the last quarter with two Demons majors leading them to a win at Medibank Stadium.

Despite the Colts third loss in a row there were plenty of positives for a youth filled side.

Connor Wilkinson was outstanding for the Lions cause with 26 touches and his usual ferocity for the contest. The hard-working midfielder is also providing great leadership for a maturing Colts side.

Ethan Burnett has also been gathering momentum since returning to Colts football with another powerful performance in the midfield. The silky 17 year old is starting to acclimatise to the next step of his football at Subiaco.

Ryan Vermeersch was the go to target in the forward line again for the Lions but was hampered by Subiaco’s delivery. Vermeersch finished with a return of one goal and four behinds due to the difficulty of his scoring chances.

GAME CHANGERS

WILLIAMSON THE GIANT:
Player Development Officer Jeff Lind was ecstatic with the elevation of 201cm ruck-man Ashton Williamson over the off-season and the 16-year-old giant is starting to make an impact. Williamson was fantastic in the ruck against Perth and his mobility was on display generating three inside 50’s from centre-bounces.

UNDERMANNED, BUT NOT UNDERDONE
Subiaco have suffered a string of injuries woes to senior players in 2014 with Cody Grace (knee) and Adam Creeper (foot) done for the season but the Lions fighting spirit remains strong. The Colts were also without Greg Clark and Max Walters for the crucial Demons clash but showed what they are capable of when playing high pressure Subiaco football without the big names. Liam Catalfamo and Dylan Campbell got their first Colts games whilst players like Bailey Nylander and Lawrence Mckenzie continue to provide roles.

BUSCALL EXPERIMENTATION
Corey Buscall is mostly known for his exploits in the back-line for the Subiaco Colts but in the last couple of games Steve Armstrong has experimented with the 183 centimetre utility as a forward. With solid hands and an excellent reach, Buscall could become an ally for key forwards Ryan Vermeersch and Justin Woodley in the home stretch.
