Lions roar over Thunder
- Saturday, 28 June 2014
Subiaco have overpowered the Peel Thunder at Medibank Stadium to record a 26 point victory.
The Lions were too strong for the Fremantle affiliated side who boast a range of AFL listed players such as Jon Griffin, Anthony Morabito, Matt De Boer, Kepler Bradley and Hayden Crozier.
Despite a tight contest through the majority of the Round 14 clash the home-side broke away in the last with four goals to one.
Kyal Horsley was outstanding again with 32 disposals and a goal as the Kalgoorlie midfielder gathers momentum in the maroon and gold
Key forward Matt Boland was lively around the goals early until a knee injury left him sidelined for the second half.
Subiaco youngster George Hampson was also important with 22 touches and four goals rotating between the forward line and wing.
BATTLE OF THE GIANTS:
Subiaco had a large task at hand with the travelling Peel boasting one of the biggest squads in the WAFL. The Thunder had a superior height advantage against the Lions so Subiaco had to be smart with their ball use. The Lions were fantastic at working the ball around the big Thunder players to negate their obvious size advantage. Subiaco talls Frank Stockley and Andrew McDougall were also impressive against Fremantle pair Jon Griffin and Michael Apeness.
A handful of defenders are the reason Subiaco are so dangerous on the counter-attack. The efforts of players like Wayde Twomey, Darren Rumble with the new additions of Aaron Heal and Daniel Lieshman make a potent back line who are capable of running the ball. On multiple occasions, especially in the first half, Subiaco defenders intercepted the ball and ran it out of the danger zone to set up scores.
WOOD RETURNS TO THE DEN:
Michael Wood returned to the Subiaco Football Club since being drafted to the Fremantle Dockers with pick 17 in the AFL Rookie Draft. The versatile key player looked mature against his old side with 15 disposals.
QBE MAN OF THE MATCH:
The winner of this week's QBE Man Of The Match is Andrew McDougall who collected 19 disposals, five inside 50's and nine hit-outs. Congratulations to Phillip Ker who correctly guessed the winner! Remember to vote for your Man Of The Match at qbeinsured.com.au/lions
