Top of the Table
- Thursday, 01 May 2014
Subiaco will host another top of the table clash on Saturday when they meet Swan Districts in a twilight game at Medibank Stadium.
The West Australian’s WAFL season preview saw 8 out of 9 WAFL experts tip Swans for the 2014 wooden spoon.
Five rounds in and the boys from Bassendean have lost only one game (by 18* points to East Perth).
Only three of the same eight experts tipped Subiaco to win enough games to make the top four.
This round seven clash is leaving these experts with red cheeks.
The Swans have proven a tough team to beat so far with a firing forward line and experienced midfield leading the way.
The biggest surprise packet for the Swans has been young forward Ricky Cary who has kicked 18 goals in his first five league games to lead the Bernie Naylor medal race.
Subiaco might turn to key defender Dylan Elliot to blanket the talented youngster, with Elliot proving to be an excellent shutdown player in 2014.
There will also be an instrumental battle in the midfield with the Lions facing ball-magnets such as Kirk Ugle, Justin Simpson and Matt Riggio.
Look for Subiaco players such as Chris Phelan, Brett Mahoney and Jarrod Kayler-Thompson to stem the tides of the black duck midfielders.
Wayde Twomey and Shaun Hildebrandt will face their former side for the first time on Saturday; providing a bit of extra spice to the encounter. Twomey played 98 games for the Swan Districts including the 2010 WAFL Premiership. Hildebrandt had a shorter two-year, 42 game stint at the Swans before returning to the Lions this year.
LAST TIME THEY MET
The last time Subiaco and Swan Districts met each other was Round 13 of the 2013 in a one-sided Swans affair. Subiaco couldn’t contain the finals bound black ducks with key forward Tim Geappen kicking six. Ironically two of the leading ball-getters in this encounter were Wayde Twomey (31) and Shaun Hildebrandt (28).
