In The Mix

Subiaco have one of their strongest senior lists in recent years with both league and reserves side sitting on top of the ladder after Round Four.

A potent combination of steady recruiting and young talent have Subiaco poised to be a powerhouse in 2014; with the depth of the squad running deep into the reserves side.

Head Coach Jarrad Schofield has the glorious problem of selecting 22 players from the pool of talent and these are players that could find themselves in the League line-up in the near future.

Reece Blechynden is building form in the reserves after returning from a year out of football. The rugged midfielder is averaging 20 disposals and provides great leadership. Blechynden was a part of the Subiaco side that featured in the 2011 Grand Final.

Rhett Kerr is a pacey goal-kicker that’s working hard to re-claim his position in the first side. Kerr was a league regular from 2009-2013 and like Blechynden featured in the 2011 Grand Final side. Kerr is a versatile player with great athleticism.

20-year-old Bill Featherstonhaugh has been a highly revered talent since emerging from the Colts system in 2012. Feathers has a big frame and an excellent work-rate. 2014 might be his year to step up into league football.

Another product of Kalgoorlie’s humming talent mine Joseph Scafidi has been thriving in senior football after coming up from the Colts system last year. Like a lot of the boys coming out of Kal, Scafidi is well built and extremely hard working. Can play as a central midfielder, half-back line or on the wings.

Bogensperger is a handy midfielder that could provide a midfield role for the Subiaco Lions league side. Had a brief amount of league experience in 2013 where he played five games in a rebuilding phase. Came back in Round Four for the reserves side against Peel Thunder to record 25 disposals.

Dylan Clarke is one of Subiaco’s more interesting players. Although most pundits would remark on his smaller size the pocket rocket doesn’t let his stature hold him back. Clarke has kicked eleven goals in two games including a whopping bag of seven against Peel in Subi’s 83-point win. With one of the most natural kicks on the senior list, Clarke might find himself a spot in the league side at some point.

Big man Andrew McDougall is working his way back from a knee injury incurred in the pre-season clash with East Fremantle. McDougall made his return against Peel with a dominant display to record 23 disposals and 19 hit-outs. So far Frank Stockley and Lachlan Delahunty have been managing the ruck duties in the league side, but a healthy McDougall might free up utility Lachlan Delahunty to a key position.

Lefanu is a consistent midfielder who has the versatility to play anywhere on the park. Was featured in the back line last year for the league side and caught the eye of spectators and coaches alike in his nine games. Lefanu is definitely a future player for the Subiaco Football Club and could find himself playing a role in the 2014 league side’s plan.

Moore is a classy on-baller who can play inside and outside. Was unluckily dropped for the return of captain Kyal Horsley against Peel and looked a league above the rest gathering 32 disposals for the reserves. Will be one of the front-runners to make an appearance in the league side this week.

Ray Daniels made his return to senior football against Peel and was extremely lively. The South Bunbury product gathered 24 disposals and kicked three goals. Can play as a high half forward or as a midfielder.

Smythe is a consistent midfielder who is currently averaging 15 plus possessions a game. Showed what he was capable of in round two against East Fremantle where he gathered 21 disposals and kicked three goals.

Team selections for Subiaco’s Good Friday clash with East Perth will be finalised Thursday.
