WA sealed a piece of history on Saturday with a come-from-behind 17-point-win over Victoria in Northam.
It’s the first time the Black Swans have beaten the big V since 1991.
Subiaco stars Clancy Wheeler (14 disposals, 5 tackles and kick 1.1) and Jarrod Kayler-Thomson ( 19 disposals and 3 Inside 50's) played major roles in the win, while Swan Districts Wayde Twomey (5 goals) was awarded the Simpson medal as best on ground for WA.
Victoria lead by as much as 31 points during the third quarter but a ten goal second half saw secured the upset win at Henry Street Oval.
Late in the last quarter Wheeler drifted across a pack of players to take a game steadying mark in defense, while Kayler-Thomson found plenty of the ball playing on a wing.
For Victoria Chris Cain was judged best afield and took home the Frank Johnson medal after gathering 32 disposals for the losing side.
Former Lion Adam Cockie managed 22 disposals.
WA coach Mark Webb adds a state game victory to his WAFL premiership and Foxtel Cup title, in what’s been a remarkable start to his coaching career.
