As this year’s 16’s carnival comes to a close the Subiaco Football Club emerged with several encouraging performances.

The Lions rotated 53 players through the carnival, a towering increase on the usual maximum of around 40 with the football club making an emphasis on exposing as many players as possible to the talent pathway.

Along with the record amount of representatives, five of Subi’s 16’s have been included in this year’s WA Nationals Squad with Greg Clark, Ethan Burnett, Liam Tedesco, Brayden Quinn & Josh Chapman chosen in the 35 man training squad for this July’s Nationals.

With the purpose of the 16’s carnival to identifyand develop players from Subiaco’s zones, Player Development Officer Jeff Lind is happy with the results.

“We’ve got some really good talent coming through as you would expect. There is a lot of depth in this 2013 class and we made a conscious effort this year to throw the net wider; giving more players an opportunity.”

Another feature of the 16’s development program is to prepare Subi’s young players for the next level of football; to do this the 16’s system mirrors the Colts both in drills and coaching.

“The boys responded how we expected them to perform; we’ve got a set program with how we train them; mirroring the Colts system with the coaching and drills. We have three coaches from the Colts coaching panelwhoare also a part of the 16s to make the transition into Colts football as seamless as possible.”

“Now the carnival is over we have about a dozen of the 16’s we expect to join the Colts training group within the next few weeks to continue the process; and they will be eligible for selection with the rest of the squad.”

The fresh group of 16’s entering the Colts system will be hoping to follow the lead of State selected Greg Clark, who’s started every Colts game this season and currently leads the team in tackles.

“Greg Clark was a dominant player in the State Schoolboys (15s) carnival last year and was invited to train with the Colts this pre-season and he just stamped his mark. There was good communication between the Colts staff and the academy to make sure his development was being enhancedand he hasn’t looked back.”
