Subiaco Gallant in Defeat

The first match of round two kicked off tonight with Subiaco going down to West Perth by four goals.

The Lions hit the front for the first time early in the last quarter but four straight goals to the Falcons ensured they won the match 11.12 (78) to 8.6 (54).

Kody Manning kicked the first two goals of the game to get West Perth of to a flyer.

The Falcons had three majors on the board before Ryan Herring kicked Subiaco’s first goal of the game after taking a brilliant mark.

West Perth then kicked two goals to extend their lead before Myles Smythe nailed a goal from 25m out deep into time on in the first quarter.  At quarter time the Lions trailed the Falcons by 23 points.

Jarrad Schofield must have said something at the break as his team kicked the first two goals of the quarter.  Both were kicked by West Coast Eagles rookie Callum Sinclair.

Chris DeLuca then scored a brilliant goal from outside 50m to bring Subiaco within four points.  At half time the Lions were behind by seven points.

Jason Salecic kicked the opening goal of the third quarter.  This was West Perth’s first since the opening quarter.

Subiaco then kicked two goals in a minute through DeLuca and Clancy Wheeler to bring the margin within two points.  At three quarter time West Perth were leading the Lions by five points.

Subiaco hit the front for the first time in the match through a goal from Rhett Kerr.  The Lions weren’t in the lead for long though as Josh Mellington restored the Falcons lead with a goal.

Goals then came from Matt Fowler, Anthony Tsalikis and Matthew Guadagnin to ensure West Perth ran out victors by 24 points.

Brett Mahoney had 29 possessions and was assisted by Jarrod Kayler-Thomson (28), Aiden Parker (24) and Callum Sinclair (17)

Shane Nelson had 30 possessions for West Perth and was helped Rohan Kerr (29), Aaron Black (25) and Mark Hutchings (25)

First Quarter
It was all West Perth at the start of the game.  The Falcons kicked the first three goals of the game before the Lions kicked their first.  West Perth kicked 6.1 (37) to Subiaco’s 2.2 (14) in the first term.
 
Second Quarter
Callum Sinclair was dominant, kicking two goals inside the opening three minutes of the second quarter.  Subiaco were the better team in the second quarter and managed to bring the margin to seven points at the main break.  Brett Mahoney had 13 disposals and Aiden Parker were the better players for Subiaco in the opening half.
 
Third Quarter
Two goals to one in the third quarter saw the Lions bring the margin back to five points at the last change.  Since quarter time West Perth had kicked one goal eight behinds.  Brett Mahoney was having a magnificent game and had 24 possessions from three quarters of football.
 
Fourth Quarter
The Lions got the all important first goal of the last quarter but from then on it was all West Perth as they kicked four goals straight to win the match.
 
Star Watch
Brett Mahoney had 29 possessions, 5 marks, 3 tackles and 6 inside 50’s in a performance that is sure to please the Subiaco Football Club.
