Lions with the loudest roar

The Lions Colts have come away with a win in their third pre-season matchup, defeating Claremont 11.8 (74) to 6.14 (50).

Subi were near full strength for this encounter and were impressive from the outset, restricting and negating the Tigers with their brand of high pressure football.

Cody Grace showed why he’s got the coaches excited, kicking three goals in the first half and setting up three more to give Subi early dominance.

He was assisted by a first class performance from his midfield though with Andrew Vawser, Hayden Kennedy, Joshua Deluca, Connor Wilkinson and Tom Flematti all having major impacts on the flow of the game.

The Lions may have also found another key forward for 2013 with Ryan Vermeesch kicking straight as an arrow with four crucial goals.

Influential Players:
Cody Grace:
Grace was in everything in the first half, kicking 3.2 and directly setting up three other goals for the maroon and gold. Has an intimidating presence in the forward line and looks set to explode in 2013.

Joshua Deluca:
Deluca was extremely impressive around contests and continuously pestered Claremont’s midfielders from the get-go. Showed exactly what he could do in the fourth quarter when gathering it in space, running 50 metres and hitting Vermeesch on the chest which lead to a direct goal.

Hayden Kennedy:
Kennedy looks fit and ready to do some damage in 2013 with a gut-running display which saw him almost hit 30 touches. Is extremely versatile and willing to fight at every contest.

Declan Jackson:
The big back-man wore every opponent like a glove today forcing forwards to earn their keep. Second and third attacks at the ball were a feature of his game, often diving on the ball and running up the field to support the rebound.

VAWSER THE ENFORCER:
The senior midfielder will undoubtedly be a leader of this year’s Colts side, but does most of his talking with his actions. Kicked well, chased well and tackled hard in this win and is a perfect role model for future Subi midfielders.

FIRST QUARTER:
A dominant first quarter by Subiaco had them leading 2.2 14 – 1.0 6 after goals to Cody Grace and Ryan Vermeesch got them off to the perfect start.

Pressure through the midfield and decisive defending by Declan Jackson, Scott Rolley and Hayden Kennedy prevented Claremont from finding targets in the forward arch.

Connor Wilkinson and Tom Flematti were hot early with 20 touches between them by the start of the second.

SECOND QUARTER:
The Lions looked smooth on the attack in the second quarter with swift disposal and long kicks finding Cody Grace one on one with his opponent on three occasions in the first five minutes.

Grace showed his class on two of them, out-muscling his opponent and kicking two goals.

Max Walters re-affirmed Subiaco’s dominance 11 minutes in, after Grace found the ball on the lead at the 50, handed it to Walters who bounced it in from distance.

Grace was amongst it again moments later when he gathered the ball in the 50 after a Keenan Higgins centre, laying it off to Rhys McAlister for another major.

Midfielders Hayden Kennedy and Joshua Deluca had plenty of it in the second quarter finishing with 12 and 11 disposals respectively.

THIRD QUARTER:
The third started with a bang going from end to end in rapid succession. Antoine Garlett showed why he broke club agility records this year bursting into open space and almost setting up a goal for Higgins.

Claremont threatened to make a comeback on a couple of occasions but both times Ryan Vermeesch had the poise to kick his second and third goal.

FOURTH QUARTER:
Subiaco had to come out firing to stave off a hungry Claremont in the fourth and senior forward Michael Wood had the weapon, slotting his first of the game from 20 out.

Following the trends of the game again, Wilkinson had the reply to another Tigers major slotting on the run for Subiaco’s tenth goal to take away any chance of a comeback.
