Falcons Swoop Vulnerable Lions

SUBIACO have slumped to five straight losses after falling to archrival West Perth by 22-points at Arena Joondalup.

West Perth led all afternoon and controlled the majority of the running but failed to put the Lions to bed in the first half.

An early third quarter charge from Subiaco brought them within a goal but two 50m penalties gifted West Perth responses and halted the run.

The Falcons finally pulled away with a pair goals late in time on in the third and the first couple of the fourth.

200 game veteran and Subiaco skipper Aidan Parker and Clancy Wheeler had 25 possessions for the Lions.

The unassuming Kane Bloxsidge managed 25 touches.

West Perth had consistent contribution across the board with ten of their players recording over 18 possessions for the day.

Mark Hutchings and Shane Nelson led the way for the Falcons with 27 and 26 possessions respectively.

The result brings the sides level on 4-5 records on the WAFL ladder on 16 points.

QUARTER BY QUARTER

First quarter:
In a quarter which West Perth controlled all of the running their inaccuracy in front of goal prevented them from hurting the Lions on the scoreboard. The Falcons’ eight shots on goal to the Lions two meant little as they only led by one goal at the first change.

Second quarter:
West Perth received reward for their first quarter effort when they kicked the first two goals of the second quarter. Brant Chambers responded for Subiaco to bring it back within one straight kick. However, two goals deep into time on from West Perth opened up their lead at the half.

Third quarter:
It was the Lions who struck first in the third through Jack Anthony but a 50m penalty handed it straight back. The Lions had a run on when they kicked two in a row but another 50m penalty relieved the pressure as West Perth kicked their second of the quarter. George Hampson had two time on goals to bring Subiaco back into the contest but as quickly as they were back in it West Perth had two of their own time on goals to reinstate their lead.

Fourth quarter:
West Perth kicked the first two goals of the quarter to make the challenge even harder for the Lions. Subiaco squandering their few forays forward in the fourth as West Perth made them pay down the other end. A couple of late consolation goals for the Lions bringing the margin saving some respectability.

Stats that matter:
West Perth more than doubled Subiaco’s run and carry – The Falcons recorded 285m of run and carry to Subiaco’s 110m.

Too many passengers:
West Perth had far greater contribution across the board. Eleven West Perth players had over 18 possessions, Subiaco only had eight.
